An Austin hippie original, Magnolia Cafe, like its 24-hour doppelganger Kerbey Lane, should be a required stop. The pancakes are the best on the menu, but the food isn't really the reason you visit. I think it's the atmosphere, what with the slipshod decor and charm of Texas' funkiest city.
Magnolia Mud and shrimp quesadillas are my favorite hangover food ever... with a cold glass of Spribiscus to wash it all down. The place always smells nice and they constantly switch up the art on the walls.
Late Night Delight! – For that special meal between 6 shots of liquor and Breakfast, there is no better place to be than Magnolia Cafe! Quick and friendly service paired with delicious fresh food, makes this South Lamar diner my go-to Late Night/Breakfast destination. Loved it!!!
An Austin Standard – breakfast was great, service was perfect, just the wait was a bit too long. But well worth every second.
a bit disappointed – We went for dinner and then went back for breakfast. At dinner time hubby got really good roast pork, it was actually delicious, however my bison burger was dry, small and tasteless. The home fries had a weird taste for me.
Hoping breakfast would be much better we returned the next day. The pancakes were awesome but my omelette was pretty unflavorful. I had the Popeye. I guess I didn't expect as many onions. If you order anything with red onions, be prepare for a LOT! Service was just ok too... our waiter was obviously just too cool for the place and looked like he'd rather be anywhere else than there.
Overall a disappointment
Interesting – Had breakfast on Easter 2010. My party was impressed with the quality of the food and decor. The crowd was huge for Easter brunch. However, we were put off that a southern breakfast restaurant did not serve grits or biscuits. My Florida hometown homies were quite incredulous when I facebooked them regarding the conspicuous menu omissions. Would I go back? Probably but only after I find a grits and biscuits joint as my first option.
it sucks – got a hamburgesa yesterday- the meat had an odd weird small- I had severe gas pains all night- and I only ate a few bites before I realised how shi**y tasting it was.
never going back- I have a McDonalds burger which was better served by a sweating negro.
What's The Deal – This place never fails...I don't know why there is bad reviews...I never have had a bad experience at this wonderful establishment.maybe it all the hipster aspect coming thru the invisible screen that is set up before Fran's(another great place)You come in,wait for Daniel or somebody else to call your name (after you sign in on busy days)get a booth, enjoy the great artwork, with some Delicious Chips and Salsa(which is always good..i would put it up against any other salsa in the city)order your food from the cool menu....service is prompt and always served with a smile by everyday Austinites that are from the city and not dress like the people you see walking around Home Slice or Guerro's.the porions are always huge and the bill is always reasonable.yea I love this place.SUPPORT LOCAL!
Go to Galaxy Cafe instead! – Magnolia Cafe is one of the most overrated places in Austin. The service is bad, the restaurant is always very dirty, parking is a royal pain, and the food is nothing to write home about. The only thing I would recommend are the pancakes and hibiscus tea, but it's not worth putting up with everything else.
I would, however, strongly recommend Galaxy Cafe. The food is great, it has a really nice atmosphere, the service is fast, and the people who work there don't look like they are in desperate need of a shower like at Magnolia!
Bad tex-mex – Let me start off by saying that the service and atmosphere is great. The waitstaff is awesome and other food menu items are tasty. However, I DO NOT recommend the cheese enchiladas. I ordered them and they looked like a plate of slop. The smell made my friend lose his appetite. It seemed as though all they did was take cheap store bought corn tortillas, filled them with cheese, zapped them in a microwave, then poured more cheese over them which made the dish soup enchiladas and popped them in the microwave again. Then added the disgusting mild sauce. The rice and beans had no flavor whatsoever. The best thing I got was a coke! My advice, stick to other items and avoid the tex-mex, unless you are used to crappy tex-mex. But taco bell was like fine dining compared to Magnolia on S. Congress.
some of the worst food i i have ever had – My wife and I have been to the resturant twice now and both times it has been horrendis
I ordered a buger and what i got im sure couldent have been beef I think it was tofu or soy as it did not have a flavor at all the only good point to this resturant was that we fif get good service just crappy food
