The SoCo Tex-Mex joint famous for celeb sightings, Guero's is also well-known for their extensive margarita menu. They don't go crazy with fruity flavor combos here, but spice up their 17 margarita offerings with various tequilas, ranging from sharp blancos (aged the least) to smooth anejos (aged the most). This is also the place where Tarantino's 2007 slasher film, Death Proof, opens.

You might recognize Guero's in the opening sequence of Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. This famous South Congress eatery was featured heavily in the beginning of the film before the main characters moved over to the delightful Texas Chili Parlor. Austinites have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant; some say the food is mediocre, but the location and convenience of bringing out-of-towners can't be beat. If you think their Mexican cuisine is subpar, hit their patio for some live music and delicious top-shelf margaritas.

Looking to grab a good margarita and see a celebrity at the same time? Gueros is your spot then. And try the fish tacos while you're at it, will ya?

I love Gueros for their chicken tacos. Prices are about average. Crowded a lot but nice place to wait. Margaritas are good, not too sweet.

Terrible Service filled with attitude and contempt. – In one word: Furious.

Gueros does not take reservations. I understand that. To the point where I discussed it with a manager a week before I attempted to dine there. I called and explained that my wife and I are from Austin and were coming in for her birthday. We wanted to dine at Gueros before a show nearby. We have 15 people with us. His words EXACTLY were "We don't take reservations, but give us a call the morning of and let us know what time you'll be here. I'll make sure we put the tables together and put your name on the waiting list. It shouldn't be more than 10 minutes or so as long as you're all here on time."

I called the morning of. The hostess on the other end understood what I was talking about. "Sure.." she said... "I've got you down for 15 at 7:30, make sure you're all here by then!" OK Cool. We're going to get to dine at Guero's, and see our show. Everything she wanted for her birthday... Yeah right.

As soon as we walked in (5 minutes early) I could tell something was wrong. I asked the hostess right away about the party for 15 on the list. She stammered.." I uh...threw that sheet away. I'm sorry" OK, hmmm. I asked for the manager. I expected the "We messed this up let me fix it" attitude. Instead I got the "We don't take reservations dude, are you stupid?" Attitude. Well with a smirk I was told "Yeah man, I mean, we could get you seated in like an hour and a half, maybe two hours.." then "Well who did you talk to? Nobody would've done that!" Now they're questioning my integrity. Not well received in the service business my friends. Take a class or something.

Through all of this. I saw empty tables. It would have been some shuffling, but there was a way to accommodate us. Nope. As I tried to respond with a suggestion he turned and walked away, ignoring my party. My wife was just bummed out. That's where I'm upset. Not the wait but the treatment.

I apologized to everyone and called Botticelli's across the street where, after I explained what happened and despite their hour-long wait, the owner shuffled around the back patio and made room for my party IMMEDIATELY. the night was saved. Guero's did NOTHING.

Will this happen to you? Probably not. But it should be known that they took a time to shine and instead quite frankly shoved us aside without remorse.

Eh... – Can the service at Gueros just get a little bit better please?

I love the food and the margaritas are pretty good too, but this is almost always spoiled by moody waiters and 25minute refill or check delays. Please get some good waiters Gueros! I would love you so much more

Terrible service – The food at Gueros is good I'll grant you that, but the service will make you stay far far away. Slow, indifferent, careless are some of the adjectives I can use to describe the wait staff.

Snob land. – Maybe if we had dressed differently and acted snobby, maybe a a snob working there would have noticed me and my friend. Finally, we were seated outside amongst the pretentious snobs that were hob knobbing with thier snobby looking little dogs. Fe-fe must have her sweater and jewelry. Took forever to get the food, had to pay extra for guacomole and salsa, how fkg. cheap is that?!!! Food wasn't anything I couldn't have done myself at home. Curras kicks this places butt! So they have outdoor tables, big frckin' deal. That's not enough to erase the memory of the service and food.

Bad Bad – We were in Austin, TX for the first time ever this weekend for rowing meet. Waited for awhile to eat at Gueros. Server could have cared less about us...we had to ask for for water. Order guacomole (sp?) and she put the order in as queso...and we continued to wait. She was paying alot more attention to the table of older, richer looking folks next to us. We finally flagged down a bus boy who was awesome. Food was marginal at best and slow to get to our table. The fastest part of the whole meal was when my husband gave the server his credit card. I kid you not, it was less 30 seconds and she had it back to him...wanting to free up the table for the next round of suckers. Try Serrano's instead of Guero's...you won't be sorry you did. This place gets by on being "famous" versus serving good food and providing good customer service.

Cool Location and Atmosphere, Mediocre Food and Service – Guero's is in a cool old building, right on Congress in a very interesting part of Austin. The food is ok, about a C+ compared to other Austin places. (Note to people from California, Arizona and New Mexico, Tex-Mex is definitely on the bland side, you will not be impressed by any "Mexican" restaurant in Austin. Even the Queso they swear by is about as hot as taco bell)

Guero's is a perfect place to get a patio table, have a few margaritas, eat some queso, and watch the people and cars on Congress.

A somewhat downside, it seems Guero's gets it's crew from the same place as Thundercloud. I like an eccentric crew as much as anyone, but it's not cool when your waiter looks like he hangs out under I-35, and can't remember a beer order for longer than 38 seconds.

Worst mexican Food I EVER Had!!!!!!!!!!!! – The only reason I came here was because i heard it was a celebrity hot spot. I had seen a picture of keanu Reeves walking in the front door last christmnas with Richard Linklater. I figured if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me. BOY was I wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I went on a family day trip. I was expectig good food since there was a hugh crowd. You have to get your condiments like you're at Taco Cabana. Which by the way has better food!!!hahah!!

My mom had a chalupa that had a teaspoon of beans and a small amount of cheese. THe Taco al cabon was a joke. The tortilla was cold and there was a small piece of what look likr chicken in the tortilla. it was so sad,

My Rice was cold. The one and only good thing. Good Margarita...Goood Charro Beans.

I will never be back to this place. i have no idea why people even go. You can bring you dog and sit outside. on my way out some guy had Pointer Dog (Grey with grey freckle on there back) it tried to hug my arm when I went to pet him. If I'm in Austin Again and Keanu Reeves is walking in that will be the only reason i stomach that food again.
