With summer art camps for kids, year-round art education for adults, as well as its own gallery and theater, Dougherty Arts Center has long been a beating heart for Austin's creative community. There is a lot of art class selection here, but I would particularly recommend their darkroom photography classes. Call me old-fashioned, but just like books (not Kindles) and records (not mp3's), I'll always find film just a little more warmer and magical than its digital counterpart.
Build up the artistic heart of the city. – In Short
Located on a former Naval and Marine reserve, the Dougherty Arts Center was dedicated to the city in 1978. The space houses the Julia C. Butridge Gallery, which has 1,800 square feet available for rotating exhibits, a 150-seat fully-equipped theater and specialized studio-lab spaces. In addition to its performance spaces, the DAC runs an arts school for children and adults. Classes include dance, music, literary and visual arts, painting and drawing.
