Any troubles are in the past! – My college friends and I used to go to Little Shin Shin in the late '90s and it was excellent then. Went back this week, and it's as good as I remembered it to be. Not sure what may have happened in the time in between, but as far as I'm concerned, right now it's an awesome place with delicious food, a pleasant atmosphere and decent prices. Don't let years-old reviews scare you away--as of March 2009, Little Shin Shin is a great place for a tasty meal.
Best Chinse Great Customer Service – Amazing delicious food. Best chinese restaurant ever. Great customer service as well.
A+ highly recommended.
Horrible tasteless food – We just happened to park nearby and was hungry. When we saw the Zagat rating (old and outdated) and the "best Chinese ever" banner, we thought, "why not?" Ugh, the food was bland and forgettable, we got a lunch special and a noodle dish, which were both not worth finishing. This was just not worth 50 cents.
Editorial Review by Christy Buena – Known for its Mu Shu Pork, the restaurant tends to get crowded over the weekend as locals flock for speacials.
Do NOT be fooled! – The restaurant proudly claims that it's been voted the best Chinese food. Do not be fooled by this claim. I was fooled and ended up leaving the place extremely unhappy. We ordered general tso's chicken which was too sour. All we could smell was the pungent odor of vinegar in the sauce. Our noodles were drowning in oil and didn't have much flavor. It's surprising to me that this restaurant has regulars. The decor is no frills, the food is terrible, and the wait staff aren't friendly.
Avoid, avoid, avoid – When one enters this place, the first thing that one notices is a pay phone that has transparent packing tape all over it. Apparently, no one knows how to write, out of order. If youre in a group and claustrophobic, avoid this place. The people greeting were friendly, but thats the only thing positive thing about this place. I looked at the menu and was looking for something vegetarian. I noticed that there were some items, but did not find what I wanted. I wanted a dish of soy sauce noodles, which is a simple dish of noodles with imperial soy sauce, bean sprouts, and onions. I was not expecting the retort of the waiter who said that they make chow mein with vegetables. I ordered the vegetable chow mein and it was almost totally devoid of flavor. The only thing that was fresh in the dish was the broccoli. The presentation of it, and pretty much of everything I saw from what the other people in my group ordered, was unimaginative. The noodles were fairly greasy. The onions were cooked to the proper tenderness, but it was obvious that someone had kept the onions too long as they had an unpleasant sharp taste. The bean sprouts were not flavorful and I found myself using too much soy sauce in order to make my dish palatable. I tried a vegetarian egg roll and it was also barely palatable and required lots of soy sauce. The food was not even worthy of a strip mall. The service was insulting and rude, and it was obvious that they would rather serve people who were not Asian. I saw the same rude waiter pretty much sucking up to a table of all white persons, while he was dismissive to me and spoke to me as if I was a subordinate. From what I saw, this is merely a place where an uninspired cook decided to deep fry things and tried to pass them off as food. For this type of cooking, one can easily go to a county fair, buy an egg roll on a stick or a deep fried Twinkie and pay less.
Little Shin Shin is Great. – Sorry folks. The decors is out dated and a bit tacky but the food is unbelievable-a staple for Piedmont Avenue folks. I even drive out from the East Bay. Kung Pao is fantastic. I highly recommend it!
The Worst Chinese Food in the East Bay – The people in the east bay must have horrible Chinese Restaurants to vote Little Shin Shin the "best in the East Bay". The food was the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I live in San Francisco and have tasted my share of Chinese food. It wasn't even par with "average" chinese food. And it was expensive. To start the tea tasted like dish water. The Walnut Prawns tasted like wood and the Garlic Chicken had tough vegitables and no flavor. Don't be sucked in by the banner they have out front saying they're the best.
The hype lied. – "Best of the East Bay" the sign outside proclaims. Well, it's wrong. Granted, it may be slightly better than some of the local Chinese joints, but only because they are sub-par. Basically, no one around here knows what good Chinese tastes like, and therefore thinks LSS is decent. The food is average at best. Nothing special. I've eaten there many times, always hoping something will change, but no. Except, since Fenton's moved in, there is NO parking, and the wait for take-out can be an hour long. The hostesses also tend to be slightly rude.
Plus, it's expensive for Chinese and the portions are small. My last order, I got rice for two. The half-pint container they gave me was less than half full. Less than what any other place would give for one. They had time to make two batches in the time I waited for my food.
Gone Downhill... – Yes, I gave Shin Shin a glowing recommendation about 3.5 years ago, because it was still good then. I don't know what's happened, but the quality has gone way downhill in the past few years. For instance, my old favorite, the hot and sour soup, now has disgusting jelly blobs in it every time I order it. I have to agree that the time has come to take down the (outdated) "Best Chinese Food" banner.
