Hoover's is the king of solid southern cooking! A frequent go-to for Chicken fried steak, okra and garlic cheddar grits!

Chef Hoover, the towering presence behind Hoover's Cooking, may just be one of my favorite stories: A graduate of the big-as-your-plate chicken fried steak school, he branched off recently into a garden-based food trailer called "Soular Food" that sits just blocks away from his original east side eatery. There you can find light beet and greens-laden wraps and salads, but at Hoover's, you'll find all of your soul favorites: shrimp n' grits, catfish po'boys, black eyed peas. In other words: ideal hangover medicine.

I love the New Years Day brunch!! Gotta have them black eyed peas and they do them right (mine are better though). I also love the sausage gravy and biscuits. Good stuff. I tried a chicken fried steak once and was not impressed. The breading just didn't taste right. It was too bland. I'll keep going there for breakfast though and of course NYD brunch.

First of all I'm a good cook and I know what good food tastes like. I've been cooking for decades and I've come from a long line of good cooks. I thought I was getting ready to eat some good chicken and dressing, considering they were featured on television. But this was the most disgusting thing that I've ever eaten. It was worse than hospital food, jail food, and any other kind of food. I had the chicken and dressing, sweet potatoes, black eyed peas, greens, and peach cobbler. Everything I had was a disgrace. Just plum nasty. The food taste like they might have used dirty mop water. They should be ashamed to call this business of theirs a restaurant. They should give everyone a refund that's ever eaten there plus more money for a total waste of time. I wouldn't even feed this food to the dog pound!

Thought it would be better! – Went there for Thanksgiving will never go back. Loved their Thanksgiving menu, service nice, atmosphere interesting so nice and casual. Food was bad, flavorless, sweet, no salt added sort of like hospital food. Did they use any spices? Could be so much better! Sorry I invited family there should have cooked myself. One family member sick the next day. Restaurant needs to revamp all their recipes!

First Visit to 183 Location – Unfortunately, we went to the Hoover's on 183, Austin and the visit was disturbing, it appeared to be secluded (not busy at all). I like it quiet, but this place was unsually quiet.

I am a severly picky eater and therefore I care about the outside appearance as well as the inside environment. I almost had a change of heart about entering this place, but decided not to be so picky and give it a chance.

I grew up on Southern Louisiana food. We ordered the Charbroiled fish (good) and the BBQ Burger (perhaps over cooked) , the cornbread was dry and brittle (didn't appear to be fresh).

The sides Turnip Greens (extremely sweetened) Black eyed peas (good) Fried Okra (good).

As for the desserts, the bread pudding was extremely gritty (not use to that flavor) and the buttermilk pie which I loved dearly as a child, was totally something else. The topping of the pie looked as if it were coated with soft layer of mold, indefinately not fresh.

I regret to say that I have had a stomach virus for an entire week (not good). I am very disappointed and certainly will not be returning there.

Do your intestines a favor and avoid the 183 location. Something is terribly wrong behind the scenes there. (Unsanitary for sure)

The location in Manor, Tx. is obviously better maintained according to its good reviews.

Incredible Food – Wow! This place has some of the best southern food I have ever tried. (I would especially recommended their chicken fried steak.) Not only, did they quickly serve me, but they their prices were great for such amazing food. I highly recommended this restaurant to anyone who enjoys to eat.

great southern cooking – If you want real home cooked food then this is the place to be. There is a great selection of food choices, and everything is delicious!

The first time my husband and I went for dinner, our server took the time to tell us about the menu, and made great suggestions. The proportions are generous and not too expensive.

Love it!

Solid Southern Comfort Eatting Experience – Hoover's is a southern comfort experience hard to find in Austin these days. Perhaps a little heavy on the heat (spice), but that's part of the tradition. Collard greens made like my granny made, jalepeno spinach casserole that can both inspire and catch you on fire and some good cajun cuisine that needs to keep on growin in Austin. I was however, a little dissapointed with the boudin special. A little too dry guys. Now, I'm gonna defend these Hoover's a little and perhaps educate some previous comments made concerning a split charge. This is real estate and people gotta pays the bills and make a living. Your tip and those extra charges are there to make sure everyone is taken care of and all the bills are paid. Sitting down for two hours in a restaurant and ordering only a cup of coffee (strictly hypethetical) means people are loosing money. Hoover's is doing what every restaurant on the planet is trying to do...survive. Next time just share something. Don't ask them to split it. The more work work the restaurant and it's employees have to do for you means extra costs. It's cheaper if you do it yourself.

WONDERFUL!!! (Come hungry!) – Wife and I ate at Hoovers on Saturday. Not too crowded even at 12:00. Very informal. I had the smothered pork chops, which were great. Fork tender and delicious. Wife had the meatloaf. Another winner! The sides we ordered, potato salad and macaroni & cheese, were very good. I especially liked the sweet potato buscuits. A wonderful sweet taste along with the nicest soft texture made these the best I've ever eaten! I could have loaded down on these alone and been happy!

Great southern cooking, solid wait staff – We visited the NW Hoovers on 183 for lunch. While initially the prices seemed high, we quickly chnaged our minds once we saw the portions. Expect to bring a doggy bag home unless you are absolutely starving.

Our waiter was more than attentive and had a fun demeanor. We will definitely return!

Good ol' Southern Cooking – Well to be honest, I haven't eaten a whole lot of southern cooking, but I definitely thought this restaurant was first tier when it comes to taste. When people say everything is bigger in Texas, then Hoovers is a place you come to experience that. The wait can be long (I sometimes go during lunch on a workday) so I recommend getting there a little before 12 to get seated promptly. The staff is friendly and the food is great. The chicken fried stake was slightly above par and for some reason I just like the meatloaf. The corn bread you get in the beginning is some of the best I have ever had. I recommend the mac and cheese and the jalapeno creamedh spinach. The portions are a good value so prepared to be stuffed (or be coming home with a doggie bag). I think Hoovers is one of the best southern style cooking restaurants in central Austin.
