Neighborhoods: Hyde Park
I love the garage gym feel of Hyde Park Gym. It's definitely the gym for everyone - you'll find both the super fit Austinites and your average Joe. It's great for those of you who appreciate simplicity of a no-fuss gym. The pricing is also a real plus - cheap fees and no contracts!
The sign for Hyde Park Gym alone -- the vein-wrapped, bulging bicep bursting out of the wall -- is one of the main reasons I was convinced to move to this neighborhood. This is a no-frills, old school, mostly-dudes gym, where you won't find many inflatable balance balls, but racks and racks of hand-weights and bell bars, accompanied by a sound track of rock music and male grunting.
Best Gym in Town! – Last Saturday, Grassiron training sponsored a non-sanctioned Olympic lifting competition at the Hyde Park Gym. The event took place in the parking lot. HPG regulars showed up to volunteer, compete, and cheer on their friends. Athletes from other facilities showed up to challenge HPG's best. Local businesses (including Amy's Ice Cream) donated prizes, and New World Deli provided food for all attendees. Some very impressive athletes lifted some huge weights while the rest of us mere mortals watched and yelled in approval.
Meanwhile, inside the gym, regular folks of all ages were working out in a well-equipped, air-conditioned facility.
At the same time, in the "ab-room," a host of bodybuilding and physique competitors with the bodies of Superman and Wonder Woman were practicing their poses in anticipation of the contest season and all the magazine photo opportunities that come with it.
So there it is. A busy day at my favorite gym in the world. A great community of friends and athletes. People of all ability levels trying to improve themselves with the help of some cold iron.
As long as I live in Austin, I will never work out in another gym. This is my home. I love it from the one of a kind, custom cable machines to the well used rubber bumper plates. From the dozens of photos of the champions HPG has produced over the years to the trophies on the shelf. I love the power lifters, the olympic lifters, the body builders, the pro boxers, the martial artists, the bikini girls, the old folks, and the tri-athletes who all train here and make the HPG community so awesome.
Best gym in Austin – This is the only gym in Austin that is fair and straightforward with its membership costs. No contracts, no sneaky fees, no early termination costs or any junk like that. Just pay as you go and get your work-out on
Editorial Review – No-nonsense gym loaded with weights, plus a few bikes and treadmills. There's no initiation fee and several payment options.
