Old school drive in burger joint that grills burgers over an open flame that taste how Burger King wishes it's burgers could taste. Huge variety of sides including fried okra and an excellent corn dog
Filmmaker Richard Linklater moved to Austin in the 80s and has never left. The friendly and generous filmmaker continues to shoot the majority of films in the Capital City. Similar to his previous film Slacker, Dazed and Confused is a film about Austin and highlights many local landmarks including Top Notch. You might recognize this burger drive-in as showcasing Matthew McConaughey's glorious rat 'stache. Though the nerds claim that their jalapeno burger and fries are soggy, that is not the case today. Check out Top Notch if you want to relive the glory days of 1976 (and rat 'staches).
Immortalized in Dazed and Confused, Top Notch is the hamburger joint embodiment of Matthew McConaughey's famous line: "I get older, they stay the same age." A relic seemingly from the 1950s (even though it's only physically been around since the '70s), Top Notch serves simple, juicy, greasy burgers with perfectly golden onion rings. Order the Longhorn Special to get a bit of bacon on your burger.
Best Burgers In Austin. – This is the last true Mom & Pop drive in left in the Austin area, since 1971. Ignore "jordotech" below, they must be bored and lying. None of their statements are true in details of how Top Notch makes their food. It is the best flame broiled burger you will ever have. Drive In or dine in. Car night was great last night too.
Save your money, go to Dan's – Could have made it better at home. Imagine a bun fresh off the HEB isle with a cold slice of cheese on it with a small flavorless patty. Dan's just nukes this place. It seriously tasted like a generic family bbq burger. Oh and the tator tots could have been a microwave dinner for all I could tell. Highly overrated.
Best local burgers in town, easily – killer mom and pop burger joint. hopefully the new owners won't try to fix what isn't broken! Delicious burgers, just go there.

small, but good & cheap – Definitely better than burger king. Prices are better than a lot of places.
Like a Quaint Burger King – Go here for decor, not the food. The food is mediocre -- basically equivalent to Burger King. Overcooked, dried out burgers made from cheap meat. Little foil packets of lemon juice instead of fresh lemons for your drink. Onion rings that are just plain bad.
Awesome Burgers and Chicken for Little $$$ – Top Notch is without a doubt a place that is stuck in the past. From the old school decor and building to the cash only business model to the food prep. That is what makes this place so great, the burgers are cooked on an honest to goodness indoor grill right behind the register. It should be noted that they serve the thin patty burgers, so if you want to a thicker burger just add on an extra patty. The burgers were cooked to perfection, nice grill flavor with a hint of seasoning served on a lightly toasted bun. Normally I'm not much of a chicken fan, but the fried chicken literally falls off the bone and features a wonderfully seasoned flaky crust. This place is a must visit, but please note it is cash only (ATM is inside) and it closes at 8!
good veggie burger – love this place!! the veggie burgers are good, they put mustard on it. just a good old school place to eat. my husband loves the burgers. and the fries are good too. can't beat it as far as a burger joint goes. and it's right up the street from me.
This old-school drive-in has been serving up Austin's best burgers for over three decades. – This locals-only restaurant has not changed with the times. Embrace the flashback décor and see why Richard Linklater's 1970's period piece, Dazed and Confused, was shot on the doorstep of this famous Austin burger joint. Dine in, take out, or order up from the car. Renowned for their fried chicken as well as burgers like the Top Pick with hickory sauce, they have been serving up what hungry Austinites crave for over thirty years.
One of the best mom and pop joints anywhere! – Top Notch is amazing! I have never had anyone go there and not fall in love with the food and the atmosphere! The chocolate shakes are to die for and I'm pretty partial to the grilled cheese and french fries too!
Its above a "Top Notch" – When you drive up to the Top Notch, its like going back to the early 1970's. No wonder Richard Linklater chose this place for "Dazed and Confused". Its a great little mom and pop joint where you see the cook chargrilling up burgers(love that smell!) and frying bird. The two piece ($4.89),with Texas Toast, Fries and Slaw is one of the best deals in a town that consistantly gets more expensive to eat out in. Only drawback is to this place is no credit cards are taken.
