Old school drive in burger joint that grills burgers over an open flame that taste how Burger King wishes it's burgers could taste. Huge variety of sides including fried okra and an excellent corn dog
Filmmaker Richard Linklater moved to Austin in the 80s and has never left. The friendly and generous filmmaker continues to shoot the majority of films in the Capital City. Similar to his previous film Slacker, Dazed and Confused is a film about Austin and highlights many local landmarks including Top Notch. You might recognize this burger drive-in as showcasing Matthew McConaughey's glorious rat 'stache. Though the nerds claim that their jalapeno burger and fries are soggy, that is not the case today. Check out Top Notch if you want to relive the glory days of 1976 (and rat 'staches).
Immortalized in Dazed and Confused, Top Notch is the hamburger joint embodiment of Matthew McConaughey's famous line: "I get older, they stay the same age." A relic seemingly from the 1950s (even though it's only physically been around since the '70s), Top Notch serves simple, juicy, greasy burgers with perfectly golden onion rings. Order the Longhorn Special to get a bit of bacon on your burger.
Top Notch = The best – Top Notch is by far the best burger joint not only in Austin, but in the WORLD! It has been family owned since it began, and the owners are the nicest people in the world. Everything about the drive-in or sit-in burger place is authentic (meaning: Old School). The grill is heated by charcoal, so the burgers and grilled chicken are charcoal grilled not fakely charbroiled. The fries and other fried foods are also delicious. Get the Longhorn with fries and a soda or shake. It'll fill you up with grilled burger goodness. It's also featured in the movie "Dazed and Confused." Austin is Awesome.
User review by gostephi – awesome food, great chicken, burgers & fries...the kids love it. it's family owned & operated. food is cooked to order. great family dining
Best milkshakes in town – Top Notchs milk shakes are legendary. Their menu is simple and consistent.
This restaurant is Austin at its best. Great food in a great locale.
Overall, very good – VERY good burger. I was impressed to see the cook bringing in another bag of charcoal to grill the burgers with. I loved the chargrilled taste and the contrast that the hickory sauce provided.
I doubt the decor has changed one iota from when they opened in 1971.
However, almost $6 for a single burger, small fries, and medium tea does seem a bit steep.
Just to tasty for word's – Fresh off the grill very juicy tasty hambuger's in town.. They make them anyway you like and, the fried chicken is to die for. Homemade onion ring are great!!.. You can dine inside or you can just drive in and order outside and eat in your car. just like the old day's.
Theres a reason it is called TOP NOTCH – Top Notch has been around for as long as I can remember. It is a family owned restaraunt that has a way of making everyone who enters feel like family. The burgers are the best, grilled - and the fried chicken isnt too bad either!
name says it all – This should be number one! Everything we've tried is good. You can get nearly everything here. And if you want to step back to your childhood.. go here. It looks like it is in a 1970 time warp.
