From The Owners of Blue Nile

Serving run-of-the-mill Ethiopian fare, The Blue Nile is part of the Bay Area's seeming inability to produce outstanding African cuisine.

THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED – Just tried to go to this restaurant after reading about it on this site, but it is no longer there. The phone number has a greeting which announced that the owners are retiring after 35 years in business. The space is empty.

I love it – I've been to the Blue Nile many times since moving here, back in '94. I love the food, but we have experienced slow service a few times. My favorite dish is the Ye Siga Wat and the Doro Wat just falls off the bone. I've taken family and friends there and everyone has loved it, though my dad doesn't like eating with his fingers.

I'm not expert but I've been to 3 other Ethiopian restaurants, 2 in the Bay Area and 1 in Sacramento, and so far this is still my favorite.

Avoid if possible – My husband and I recently had dinner here and ran out of yemeni bread before finishing all of our food. We requested more and they told us we couldn't have it. I explained that we were happy to pay for it, but after talking with two waitresses and the manager, it turns out that they have a policy that they refuse to sell anyone additional bread. Instead they brought two plastic forks to finish the meal. Even though they recognized us as regular customers, they were rude, condesending, and would not accomodate this simple and common request.

Needless to say, we won't be going back.

Favorite Ethiopian – I've been to the Blue Nile at least 5 times, and I miss it since I'm now in LA. My favorite thing is their honey-wine, Tej - I can't find anything like elsewhere.

Great romantic spot, but the service is slow.

Love eating with my hands, and the bread is always hot.

The beef tibs is great, and the lentil spicy vegeterian dish is too.

mediocre – the flavors of the food tasted almost more mexican than ethiopian. the service was very friendly and fast but the food ranks toward the bottom of bay area ethiopian restaurants. It was certainly edible, just very uninspired.

Mildly appealing – The atmosphere is nice for a quiet romantic dinner though it is a bit cramped. There are no utensils, must use hands. The honey wine is good. The food was decent but not great. My friend and I got sampler plates and were not struck by anything. The curries were rather bland.

The Blue Nile has colorful appeal – Great food, great people, great prices. Ambience is wonderful. Go there!!!
