Nice place! – This place seems less popular than it should. Possibly people's expectations are not met- designated as a 'cafe' I'ld expect nice little sandwiches, good desserts, yummy salads, and other such dishes, which this place does VERY well. A creative menu with neat ingredients- standard fare with flair, much like Citrus Grill, althought the latter is more complete. What I like about Red butt is its changing menu- refreshing.
The ambiance here is great. And abhorring crowds as I do, commenting on seating during prime time... I'll come here for a late lunch or early dinner. The patio is a nice change, as many of the restaurants along Foothill don't have outdoor areas. Eating outside is one of the things that make SLC great!
They have good beers on tap. The best approach: get a salad (any of them are fantastic) followed by dessert (the best in town).
Southwestern fare in an understated, comfortable atmosphere--with prices that are down-to-earth. – The Scene
Everything about Red Butte Cafe conveys a warm and welcoming earthiness. The decor of muted Southwestern colors includes seating at cozy tapestry-covered booths or attractive wood tables. There's a patio, but the only view is the Foothill Village parking lot.
The standard menu includes cold and grilled sandwiches, a popular French onion soup, and enchiladas. The sensational salads, which incorporate grilled red trout, smoked turkey or several variations on the chicken breast are the perfect solution for when you just want a salad for dinner. Specials run for two weeks, so if you find something absolutely irresistible, like the cooked-to-perfection salmon, you have another stab at trying it again before the menu changes. You can always count on finding a salmon entree, special appetizer and vegetarian dish on the biweekly list.
Lost our order – The only good time to go here is when it is not busy....we have been going here once a week for years, usually on Sunday afternoon, and have never been disappointed. Well, we made the mistake of going on a friday at 6 pm and it was awful---we were seated right away, the waitress took our order, but it never came, and I mean NEVER...4 other couples were seated after us and they were done eating by the time we asked where our two salads were....they lost our order!. THe waitress never came back to tell us anything---she simply avoided us and we just sat ther looking stupid. We will never go back.
Room for Improvement – We feel there is room for improvement. Service during the lunch hour was abnormally slow--25 minutes. The server was not very attentive to refill drinks in the meantime. Onathe grilled SW chicken sandwich, the cheese-onion bun would have been better heated. The accompanying pasta salad was "stale". The seafood chowder was very nicely spiced but the italian pasta salad was dry and lackluster; it would have benefitted from more vinagrette dressing. We often frequent the Desert Edge which has a similar menu and I feel the Desert Edge does a better job of the food, although I prefer the somewhat "quieter" (all is relative) atmosphere at Red Butte. Anything the owners could do to mute the noise level at either location would be appreciated. Is there no such thing as a quiet lunch anymore?
Food with Soul – The only place in SLC where you can get yourself one heckuva grilled catfish sandwich. To top it off, it's EXCELLENT! The burger is awesome too, as is the fiery chicken sandwich with chile peppers. Entrees like the salmon are beautifully prepared and tastey. There's a definitive Southwest flare to everything here and many of the dishes are can't miss. Save plenty of room for dessert! Check out the array of worthy candidates as you walk into the restaurant. Overall, an able and willing place where the food has serious soul!
Cozy and satisfying – Love the small, cozy feel of Red Butte and love their sandwiches and cheesecakes even more.
Perfect Polenta! – The polenta served with the chicken lunch is wonderful! Delicately seasoned and so creamy! The service however, is non-existent. The second time I visited there I was happy with the food, but for the first time in my adult life, I left a restaurant without tipping - the sevice was that poor. From their lack of attention - I'd be surprised if they even noticed I didn't tip!
Divine Lunch – Red Butte Cafe offers the most dine lunches around. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the pasta and salad was a nice compliment to a light but elegant lunch. The service was slow, yet I would recommend this to anyone.
Bring a cell phone to call 911... – I've eaten here a few times over the years. I seem to wait long enough between visits that I forget how ill I got the last time I ate there. Wonder why locals call it the "Red Butt"? Try the special.
I double dog dare you to see if the hostess will look up to acknowledge you when you enter, or if you have to get her attention first. I've found the "ahem" or "cough cough" works pretty well. You're better off saving your co-payment and eating elsewhere.
Good dining option in Foothill – The patio overlooks the parking lot, so it's not particularly inviting, but the dining room is comfortable and open. The Southwestern food is creative and tasty. Desserts are tempting. Great place for a casual meal. Kid friendly.
