If you're looking for good drink, good craic, and good music, Murphy's is your place. My favorite times there are when Pat Carroll is singing, though Ceann is a new-found and close second. Singing along with Pat's hilarious Irish drinking songs (is there any other kind?) and the antics from his loyal followers who are more than happy to poke fun at themselves and friends when they mess up. My personal favorite meal there is an Irish breakfast (complete with blood pudding) and a pint of cider. The Irish meat and potato pie is delicious also. Maybe they're not the best in town, but they're nothing to complain about. I've introduced several friends and family members who always ask to go again when they visit the next time. This past weekend, two out-of-town friends, my wife and I went to Murphy's to hear Pat and enjoy a dinner out. We were going to order some typical Irish specialities, but noticed the Valentine's Day special instead - $35/couple for salad, sirloin or surf&turf, and dessert. We opted for that, and commented throughout how good everything was and the price was good too. We had great service as well, other than one short time once the place got to be standing room only. (I'll second the recommendation by another here that if you go on a weekend and want to sit, go early.)
I haven't eaten here... and that is a shame... clearly I need too!
Walking around Alexandria on night, we ended up here. The bar was PACKED yet the bartenders seemed like they were staying on top of things. I ordered a Guinness, I know, you're shocked.
Only hung around for that one beer since my friends were on a mission to get to every bar they could but I would have been more than happy to stay all night.
I liked the vibe of the place, the one man show with his guitar and mic were a nice addition, and the crowd seemed to enjoy him. It helped that he sang "Danny Boy".
Just stopped in for beers with some friends late on Friday and this place was hopping. Lots of folks in their late 20s and 30s, nice crowd. The bartender was excellent! She was friendly, funny, and attentive. We did have some drunky snatch one of our beers right off the bar in front of us, that was pretty hilarious, so keep your eyes on the wildlife. Reasonably priced, good live music, and a good crowd. I will definitely be back, worth a visit.
I moved to Alexandria a few months ago and a coworker wanted to take me out and show me a good time, so off to Murphy's we went! I'd never been to an Irish pub before and after coming here, I would definitely come back. The vibe inside is great, especially if you're looking for a lively crowd. Not so much if you're thinkin classy folks and a quiet bar. Good beer/drinks, great bar staff, and just all around fun. The music was great and there was a guy singing traditional songs that got the crowd involved. I left nice and drunk and happy.
YAY! FISH AND CHIPS!! FISH AND CHIPS! FISH AND CHIPS! LOL OMG the fish and chips was battered and fried to perfection! Beer batter was flavored very well and the fish inside wasn't overcooked. They give you these big round potatoes (chips) that were good too. I ordered the tuna bites for appetizer and they were DELICIOUS!! Customer service was cool. This is a nice chill spot with good fish and chips and beer. Check it out you will not be disappointed!
This is a fun, fun bar! Lots of great beer on tap and good food. Every time I've been in there's been a guitar singer with lots of sing alongs and interaction. Way too much fun! Next time in Alexandria, I'll definitely stop back in.
Rueben is the best I ever had! Great food. Smelled like a frat house the day after a party (guessing because of beer in the carpet). Waiting staff very friendly. A little loud but all in all, I will return many times for the great food.
Megan is the best. Mngr/bartender, always with a smile and so of the best service I have got in Old Town. I go here way to much. Weekends are gonna be way crowded, but fun festive crowd. Lots of tourist and such loving the Irish bar tunes. Secret, upstairs bar will not be as crowded and has different music Wed wing night also.
Friday and Saturday night are at lot of fun here. They have live singing on the first floor and everyone joins in on the fun! Nothing like a pub sing along and tasty drinks, that will put a smile on just about anyone looking for a good irish time! ;)
I have been going here since around 1986. Great vibes and service. I met a cute girl here and married her. The fireplace in the winter is very cozy!
