New Ownership Is Not Always A Good Thing – The Lunch Bunch at work used to frequent this restaurant often as it was one of the better Shockoe Slip lunch places, but today me and four of my compadres agreed that we would never again return after the unbelievably disappointing and actually sickening lunch we had today.

I ordered the beef teryaki which formerly had about 5 or 6 strips of prime beef as the main course. Today I received a minute portion of what appeared to be dog food. . . tiny wads of fat that were stewed in their own grease. As soon as I saw my food I asked the waitress about the change. She told me that the new owners thought it was too expensive to keep getting the good stuff anymore and that they decided to buy this cheap cut instead. I actually became physically ill soon after leaving. I felt like I had eaten a bucket of grease with all the taste of shoe leather.

One of my companions complained that his tiny portion consisted almost entirely of onions, while another remarked about his burnt wonton. Everyone thought that the portions were tiny and the food was terrible, and we all agreed we would never return.

This restaurant now gets all thumbs down,

one star is overrated.

The flair of the food equals the fire of the wasabi at this downtown sushi bar. – The Scene
A traditional Japanese meal is one filled with ceremony. Guests remove their shoes and take a seat at a Tatami table (the kind where you sit on the floor uncomfortably until your foot falls asleep) and indulge in the subtle tastes of Asian delights. <P> The Food
Hana Zushi specializes in the Japanese art of sushi, a blend of rice, raw fish or vegetables wrapped in seaweed. True, to the uninitiated this may not sound very appetizing. But if you're going to taste it anywhere, Hana Zushi is the place to do it. With an amazing array of combinations, the delicate wisps of ginger and the fiery wasabi dressing to the side add a kick to the relatively mild taste of the seaweed and rice-wrapped treats. A cup of sake (Japanese rice wine) may make you forget that you just ate raw fish, but be forewarned: it's potent and quick to sneak up on the unsuspecting. Don't stray too far from the sushi, however, some of the forays into other types of Japanese cuisine are not as successful here.
