Renoir, Gauguin, Tiffany--with residents like these, Norfolk's fine-arts gem easily measures up to big-city museums. – The Scene
Hands down, this is the area's best museum. With 60 galleries, an impressive library and an average of 15 special exhibits each year, the Chrysler easily competes with better-known museums in bigger cities. The museum opened in 1939, but blossomed in 1971 when Walter P. Chrysler Jr., son of the Chrysler Corporation founder, donated a large part of his fine-art collection to the museum. In the 1980s, the museum underwent a $10-million expansion.

The Collection
One of the most dazzling exhibits is the world-renowned glass collection. With 8,000 pieces, including numerous vases and Tiffany lamps, this expansive collection will shatter your expectations. Works by Gauguin, Renoir, Bernini and Georges de la Tour are also on display. Look up art information in the Jean Outland Chrysler Library, which contains more than 80,000 volumes, including 400 exhibition catalogs from around the world.

local gem – One of the best regional museums I have ever been in. As wonderful as the permanent collection is, they need to participate in more traveling exhibits.

World Class Collection – This collection, givin to the museum by William T. Chrysler, is one any museum would kill for. It was givin the Nofrolk Arts and Humanitaries Association in the '70's and it is an attraction art lovers would't want to look over wgen in Norfolk. Located in the historic Ghent distric of the city, it overlooks the Hague inlet of the beautiful and historic Elizabeth River.
