Great if you want additional STRESS – This is over a period of several years so we're rather familiar with this restaurant. Many Chinese restaurants are not known for great service, but have great food. So expectations for service are minimal. If the servers take your order, give you tea and deliver food to you, that actually meets our expectations.
Sometimes you get that service here. However, more often than not you get unusually bad service. One senses it is a management/worker issue because this place is almost uniquely awful. We're talking Ishtar the movie, Gigli, Plan 9 from Outer Space terrible. Food service at Pelican Bay must be better than this place.
If you get a response at all from them it's a quick "hai, hai" and then you can proceed to wait and wait and wait... It's interesting to watch customers flailing their arms desperately trying to catch their attention, like we're all scrambling for that last helicopter before the volcano explodes.
Once when we somehow got a waiter's attention, he yelled at us for asking for water. We were very polite but it didn't matter. So he brings us bowls instead. I suppose it's better than nothing.
On one occasion we saw a more knowledgeable customer pay a waiter upfront before seating. Maybe that's the way to get decent service here.
The only reason we even go there is if we have guests who insist on going there, or it was over a period of years in a forlorn hope that they had a change in management. Nope.
They truly are Cupertino's finest No-Star restaurant (negative stars if possible).
I have to agree with most of the review, its is one of the better dim sum places but it is very busy during dim sum hours and the service is very lousy. But that sort of comes with authentic chinese restaurants, hehe.
Service is lousy but not bad. If you love you food enough I guess you can put up with it. Dim sum is good here but there are always long waits so go at your own risk.
Avoid at all costs – Don't go there if you want to have a good time, or if you are trying to make impression on your guests.
After the hassel of finding parking space, I was hoping for a good meal. The service was much worse than before, not worth the 10-20% tips from $350, 10-course, dinner. The cook even screwed up an everyday dish---fried rice. It came out hard as rock, can not chew and swallow it, but had to since it would look bad spitting it out. I was ready to over-turn the table and throw chairs.
The Food is Great, but the Service SUCKS! – I took my wife to Joy Luck Place the other night and was surprised to find it had incredibly horrible service. Our waiter was stiff and rude, and upon our asking about various dishes, our waiter continually tried to convince us to visit the other (much more expensive) side of the restaurant. To top it all off, the restaurant closes at 9:30, but at around 9:15 the waiters began putting on their coats and coming around to collect checks. At 9:15 they came to our table and said "you better pay now. We're closing." I have never been more shocked at poor service in my life!
On the bright side, the food was excellent. In my opinion, the good food is not worth the horrible service you receive. If you like restaurants where you don't have to leave a tip, though, this is a good one. ;-)
Luck of the draw – I am a regular at the Joy Luck restaurant. I would agree with most of the reviews posted here. Food is good but service is severly lacking. If you're lucky though you might get the one or two servers that's good but most of the time they just down right ignore you. It used to be much better when I first started going there but recently it's been getting worse. Why do you ask, do I keep going? Well unfortunatly it's one of the few cantonese style restaurants around.
Go for the food, but be warned of the service.
Good dim sum place – This place has very good dim sum but awful service. The best way is to flag down a waiter and order everything upfront. If you get there late (after 1 pm), you will have to do this because there will be no dim sum left. They are known for their small steamed meat dumplings, soup dumpling, and mochi with sweet sesame filling. They also have good shrimp dumplings.
Great Chinese Food! – Great dim-sum and other dishes. I've been here both for lunch and dinner. Prices are higher than normal but I believe it's worth every penny. Parking is a headache, you need to arrive early to find a good spot... UNLESS you go during weekdays M-Th. Service is the same as any good chinese restaurant, don't expect to be pampered.
Food and services – I went there for dinner and I feel that their food is way overpriced. I went there for a causal dinner for 3, ordered 3 dishes and 1 soup and the bill turned out to be $100 with tips (I didn't order anyting fancy). And trust me I didn't get any services!!!! I couldn't even get a TO-GO box. Over all, i think Joy Luck Place's food is average, price is too high and service sucks!
dim sum yum – wonderful place with very easy free parking. everyone is well dressed in this not too fancy joint. located in a nice, small mall. get there early and walk around a bit. many good window shopping stores and wild fish market that makes me with I had my camera.
cart service, roomie, clean.
