Big 5 takes more than your money - they take your identity! – My wife purchased a $17 dollar jacket for our son from our local Big 5. It turned out to be too big and they didn't have a smaller size, so she asked for a refund. She had paid in CASH and had ra eceipt for the item from the day before.

The cashier asked to see her license for the refund. When she objected ("hey I have a receipt, it's been one day, you don't have the size I need") the manager came over and said "we will not refund your money with seeing your license".

Okay, so she SHOWS them her license, but even that was not enough, THEY RECORDED ALL OF HER PERSONAL INFORMATION into their store data base. She objected and other people in the line even commented this seemed wrong.

But it gets better. I emailed Big 5 Corporate and asked they remove her name and personal information from their data base. They informed me that the store should NOT have required this information but that they had no way to remove it. Paul Pillsbury, Director of Loss Prevention, then called me back to tell me that in addition to not deleting the information, IT WILL STAY IN THEIR DATA BASE FOREVER.

If, after reading this, you still want to shop at Big 5 remember those supposed bargains come with a price, in this case, your PERSONAL IDENTITY. The simple fact is that identity theft is rampant and the more places that have your information, the more exposed that you are. Yes, there are times to part with it, but this is just rediculous. At the very least, use a credit card - but honestly do you want to shop at a company that treats customers like this? I sure don't especially when there are some other great options just down the street.
