great sushi and food terrible waitress – we have been gone to kikuya for 30 yrs,but recently different owner that we notice quality, taste & service went down so much . sushi is still the best in town. lunch very sloppy. dinner presentation, quality & taste are good. i'm off on monday, and when i go to the resturant the sushi is terrible, and the chefs are drinking on duty, that i hate to see no care about customer& business.

kikuya japanese resturant – we have visited kikuya recently and the sushi was great but the watriess where very rude,annoying, and also she kept on telling me to "wait" slow down, and she even said to me to give her tips!!!, ok now this lady needs to get a life or take a hike she needs to be less rude she reminds me of the grinch!!!
Great food, terrible waitress – This resturant in 2010 replaces all the waitresses with 1 woman. This woman cannot really speak English and very rude. When you ordered a few dishes, she will tell you to slow down since she needs to write each dish down one at a time. And when you pay the bill, she will tell you make sure you pay tips.
Food is great but the service and manner of the waitress make you feel like she is paying you to eat there and not you are the one who is paying the bill.
Good tempura udon – I went to this place b/c I suddenly had a craving for a tempura udon, and I had a pretty good one last time I was there. I was surprised that we were the only ones dining at the restaurant from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on a Monday night. I don't know if it's the economy or the particular time and day of the week, but compared to the last time I was here for lunch a few months ago, it was surprising to see it so empty. I really didn't think it was as bad as the previous reviewers made it sound. The tempura udon was $11 and it tasted good. My other half got a whole roll (8 pieces) of unagi (eel) sushi for $6, which he said was fresh and tasted good. I think it's a decent place for a quick japanese food fix.
The end of a great restaurant – We've been going to Kikuya for decades. This week's visit was our last. The quality and service is gone. It's very sad that such a wonderful restaurant went downhill so quickly. We hadn't been there in some time, so were wondering what had happened to the normally crowded room - there were 2 other customers. When the food arrived, we understood why. The waitress got the order wrong, and the quality of the food was poor. I can get equivalent sushi just about anywhere. We didn't know it had been sold until I got home and read the prior review, but guessed as much when we saw the deterioration of the interior.
Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
Three ownership changes in last three years = inconsistent quality and signficantly higher prices – I first started going about three years ago. Lunch-time met trying to beat the hordes of Microsoft employees, and you could expect the line to reach outside the door and onto the sidewalk. The food was fresh and well-prepared, the service was decidely precise, not a wasted motion by the staff, getting your order, clearing your table, bringing your bill. That 'precision' led to something of a rushed feeling particularly knowing there was a line outside. The restaurant was sold and immediately the quality of the fish in the sushi declined markedly, portions got smaller, and the overall emphasis on the diner experience seemed to slowly disappear. The familiar staff was let go. On the other hand, word of the decline spread quickly so there were no longer lines and you could be seated immediately. About early Summer 2008 the restaurant sold again to Korean owners. The head sushi chef is gone as are the remaining wait staff and the crowds. So when your meal count drops how do you maintain revenues? Raise the prices apparently. The dinner entree had usually have went from $13.50 to $18.50 so Kikuya is now near the bottom of my dining choices in that area.
Just average.... – The food here is just ok. The portions are good sizes but the sushi isn't to die for. Their miso soup is good! The food came out fairly fast. There are other places that you might enjoy better!
Better that Todai, but not by much. Great cooked food. – This used to be our favorite Japanese places, now, I would say it is a lunch only place. The fish is not as fresh as it once was and all the food seemed overly salty.
It is not terrible, I would now say it is just average. Avoid the sushi plate or any chef's choice and stick with your favorite pieces. Our Sushi plate looked like a leftover from someone else's table, including bad rice. (I know, bad rice, how is that possible?)
The miso soup is excellent, as is the Katsu Don and the California rolls. Call me crazy but I also want delicious fish as well.
We will try again at lunch though, because of the good memories!
Always fresh, bargain lunch special – Sushi is always fresh here, love the noodles as well (nabeyaki udon, curry udon, tempura udon). The bento lunch is a deal - tempura udon, salad, rice, sashimi and whatever is the special of the day - sometimes it's tonkatsu, salmon teriyaki, etc for $10. Dinner is a little more pricey, so I don't go here that often then.
Still Better Than Most..... – As I read some of the other reviews, I agree about the change in management. I believe I did hear that Kikuya's was sold about a year ago (or less than a year ago) and new owners took over. The authenticity of the food seems comparable; the taste slightly off though, from what I would prefer; but I do know that styles of Japanese cuisine can change. I thought their service was just fine and the young waiters and waitresses were very polite and attentive. However, I think the new owners are using a cheaper cut of chicken for their teriyaki. It has more fat and too much soy sauce (salty!). Overall, this is still a favorite of our family to patronize.
