Murray (the highly regarded and celebrated bartender) may have left the building but this Seattle gem is as good as ever. Tell the barkeep what you like and trust them to deliver. The happy hour Monday - Friday also has a great list of featured cocktails and bites. Outdoor seating is a plus!
If you haven't been to Zig Zag in a while you need to remedy that. Eric & Ben are doing an amazing job whether you order on the menu or off. Still one of the very best in town!

good coffee – Good coffee and nice atmosphere and good service
Great cocktails, fun spot – This is a great spot for having after work cocktails and trying out new drinks. Service is usually great, I'm not sure I get these reviewers who try to crucify a place for one incident.
Great cocktails & atmosphere – Zig Zag is the place to go to find expertly crafted cocktails without the super steep prices of places like Vessel or Tini Bigs. The Master and the Hound cocktail was great. Went on a recent Saturday night with a group of about 5 and we had a great time. The waitresses were super nice and helpful to recommend drinks and the place was busy but not too packed. Great place to take someone who loves classic old fashioned cocktails in a hip setting.
Best drinks in Seattle – When I first went to Zig Zag a year ago, I’d never had a real cocktail before, and didn’t know half of the products listed in the drinks menu. Murray was incredibly sweet and made the whole experience unintimidating, pouring many samples for my friend and me and answering my numerous questions. As I continued to go there, I came to realize that their level of service isn’t just reserved for newbies; they have consistently been attentive and helpful. It’s low key and provides quality without pretensions, and it’s easy to sit there longer than you expected. I’ve had many a night where “just one drink” ended with me closing the bar and stumbling to a cab.
The cocktails are obviously the major draw, and I love having any of the fellas make me a whiskey-based concoction of their choosing. But the food is pretty good as well, and I inevitably end up ordering the alligator gumbo, calamari, or phyllo tart.
It’s kind of my favorite bar, and the only thing that makes me cranky is how busy it gets on Fridays and Saturdays, but I suppose I can’t change the fact that all of Seattle recognizes its awesomeness.
Very Poor Customer Service Seconded – Everywhere we ask in Seattle we are always told by industry "in the knows" that Zig Zag is the place to go to get a classic hand crafted cocktail. My husband and I went a few months ago and had an ok time. We were able to get a seat at the bar and Murray was working that night. It is a sight tosee to watch him work.
I recently returned with a group of friends with the promise they'd see Murray at work. Well, we got up to the door and even though the appearance inside the room looked sporadically populated we were told there was a 20-30 minute wait. That did not sit well with a couple males in our group. Knowing they were upset the guy at the door was able to get us in. We were docked up to one of the very slight fence style drink rest tops right next to the door. About 15 minutes later the couple at the bar next to us got up to leave. As in most bars, we thought since the seats were open we would be free to take them over. But, oh no apparently a couple that was sitting at a table in another location of the room was waiting for these spots. We were rudely told to get out of the seats by a gentleman with greasy slicked back hair. Upset with this whole incident once again we voiced our dissatifaction with how the whole thing was being handled. To be right to the point, the greasy slicked back employee told us that "if we didn't like it we could get the f**k out". With that said we left and will NEVER go back. Too bad the staff at Zig Zag think that their establishment is "all that" and feel it is ok to talk to patrons that way. You won't win many friends or patrons with that attitude.
Amazing! – This is a wonderful bar if you like a hand crafted cocktails from someone that truly knows what they are doing. Even if you are someone who knows very about cocktails you can give the bartenders a hint at things you like in a drink and presto you will have an amazing tasty beverage. This a sophisticated bar for people out to have an enjoyable evening so if you are looking for people drinking red bulls and vodka and causing a ruckus then this place is not for you.
The food here is top notch I personally like the Lamb Burger paired with a great drink of the house cocktail menu like the Efus.
This place is great for your first date of even your 73 date. It has a great relaxed yet classy atmosphere with top notch service. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Check this place out it will not disappoint you.
This restaurant is a hidden gem here in Seattle and we are truly lucky to have it.
Crap customer service & Liar – I have to say that customer service is very rare these days and the owner of the establishment really needs to go back to Customer Service 101. And I do know of restaurants that will let you sit at a dirty table to be courteous of their patrons if that is where they choose to sit. That is what the restaurant staff does: ACCOMMODATE THEIR PATRONS WITH A SMILE!! And I'm sorry but that's what this forum is all about to rate the service and make other patrons aware if there is problems. Apparently others have reported that the only great thing about this place is the bartender and the worst thing is the CONFRONTATIONAL OWNER. So if you want great drinks and crappy service this is the place.
I was standing right by my friend when all this happened. The owners response to her review was not all truth. He approached us with a stern look. He then continued with a rude and confrontational tone, he started to try something with me when my friend walked outside for some fresh air. He had made a comment to me saying, " is this how it's gonna be?" Which appalled me when he started to confront me when I had not had made any comments to him.
Then he proceeds to clean the table and instead of asking me politely to get out of his way to move a chair he rudely says to move. And what really flabbergasts me is that the owner had the nerve to call one of the people in our party regarding my friends review and asked to have it removed. That is just tacky manners which this owner clearly does not have. He was very confrontational and rude almost chest butting my friend and being very callous. And my friend at no time called him an a**. After the confrontation and rude manners and being thrown out of the bar she did call him a f**k as we were walking down the steps away from the bar to which he replied so are you.
Same disrespectful lady, same unfamiliarity of how restaurants run, and same immature use this forum. Some people are determined to share their unhappiness with everyone they meet, and in this case the world. I might point out that the other nineteen members of the party remained for several hours, were quite pleasant to serve, and were very gracious and generous upon their departure including the hostess of the party. There was only one person who got her feelings hurt in a misunderstanding and stormed off dragging her poor husband with her. Hopefully this concludes this unfortunate situation.
Horrible little place – It’s a shame – I read all these rave reviews about the Zig Zag café, great drinks, great food – great atmosphere and I got nothing. What am I doing wrong?? The atmosphere was busy, loud and the service was absolutely repugnant. My friend chose this spot for his wife’s (my best friend) 40th surprise birthday party as they’re known for phenomenal drinks. We waited some time before getting a table and when I got in, I was not only accused of cutting in line, but was literally berated for having the audacity to sit at a dirty table. This little man must have seen my confusion and annoyance with his tone, because he then said to me “Oh Really, is this the way it’s going to be tonight?!” I was absolutely shocked… I had to take a deep breath, so I went outside – my husband came to find me – and as I was telling him how rude this man was to me – there he was and he came at me again saying how he didn’t appreciate my dirty looks and that he didn’t need me coming into his establishment with attitude. Mind you readers, I had no attitude, I was trying to get a seat before my friends party was ruined. This went on with him chastising me in the middle of the bar, and me continually asking him why he was so mean. When I finally lost my temper – he got chest to chest with me – said he was the owner, and when I asked him to step back, he refused and said I was in HIS face, then I was expelled from the bar.
I found out later that this little man was indeed the owner, and had taken the time to not only explain himself to the party but apologize for HIS behavior. He also took my friends husband aside and asked him to apologize to me for being so short. He not only acknowledged his being short, but said that he escalated the situation because he was frustrated with the happy hour as it was “so busy”. Evidently I’m welcome back anytime. What?! I can’t help but think this was done only because he was worried about his tip from the rest of the birthday party. This was the most humiliating and upsetting outing I had ever had – and ultimately I missed my best friend’s party. I can tell you I never realized you couldn’t call out bad service without being verbally abused and humiliated by the staff and in this case the owner. I wouldn’t go unless you want to leave in tears.
Friday night happy hour at Zig Zag Cafe is packed. I am not aware of a restaurant around that allows customers to help themselves to dirty tables when they are running an hour long wait. I also don't know of any restaurant owner who would tolerate being called an a-- or a f--- by his patrons and allow them to remain. There was a misunderstanding between myself and this woman that I tried to clear up; however, she was more interested in insulting me so she was shown the door. These petty ad hominem remarks about myself (the little man), and the effort to undermine Zig Zag are an inappropriate use of this forum. We did not build our world class reputation by abusing our customers.
Wonderful Manhattans! – Experienced bartenders and a cozy atmosphere. A grown ups bar, which is a nice change from the usual corporate styling.
Great drinks, abhorrent attitude – A group of eight of us went to Zig Zag tonight to meet an old friend. We'd all been there before, and liked their drinks and atmosphere. We sat in the back area, where they have banquette seats and half-round tables, and had to push a couple of tables together to accommodate all of us. We all ordered cocktails and several appetizers for the table to share. The waitress was fine, nothing great but not too bad. About 35 minutes in, we'd all ordered a second round of drinks, when a short, bald man in a Charlie Sheen bowling shirt comes out of the back with an air of importance and makes a beeline for our table. Without a word, he yanks one of the tables we're using back to its rightful place, sloshing a couple of fresh drinks all over it in the process. We all looked at each other, and someone said, "can we take a couple extra chairs from over there?" you know, so we could at least all crowd around the one table we had left. To which the man replied, "Nope, the fire department wouldn't like that". And left. The guy wasn't Murray the bartender, and he wasn't serving any tables, so I assume he was one of the owners. We were there for another 90 minutes, and no one ever came and sat at that other table - I'd guess the place was about half full. Our party's bill was about $200. In these times, I'm surprised that people who have chosen to be in the service industry - you know, when you offer a service to other people, who pay you for that service - insist on treating customers badly. It's a shame that this guy's attitude overshadowed an otherwise enjoyable evening - while I work about a block away and like their drinks and atmosphere, I probably won't be going back to ZigZag anytime soon. Who wants to spend $200 to be treated like that?
