We want the old management back – We loved the old China Gate. The new management has run the place down in no time. There were only 2 carts going around for dim sum with only steamed choices and pastry items. We had to order chicken wings off the menu. We did get some kind of meatballs from the steam cart that didn't taste like any kind of meat I know. The shrimp shu mi had a funny flavor too. A manager came around and checked on us. They were good about removing dishes of the table and replenising the water. We are going to start looking for a new dim sum location.

Extremely Disappointing! – I've tried many restaurants in the International District and this was by far the worst. The food is overpriced and is terrible. The fried rice very bland, the won ton soup was watery, the egg rolls extremely disappointing, and deep fried items were very greasy. The service was horrible. We had to wait at great length between each dish. The waiter didn't seem too interested in being of service. The linens were not clean and not too sure about the dishes. Drinking glasses were not clean. Would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

Caution! – This is the worst chinese food I've ever had. Actually, this is the worst FOOD I've every had. Our first clue should've been there was no wait while other restaurants we passed by had lines and were full. The seafood was not fresh and had a very prominent "fishy" smell. One seafood dish was served in a PIE PLATE! The almond chicken was greasy and the cashews in the cashew prawns were old and musty tasting. The white tablecloths were dirty and my napkin was used. In closing, one star for this restaurant is over-stated.

Disgusting! – We went there yesterday and it was closed to their closing hour. So we ordered a few dim sum and they were all cold and disgusting. One item never came. As we were eating, there was a c_ _kroach just hanging out on the wall. That did it.

Used to be much better – When I started going to China Gate for dim sum 5 years ago, it was great: yummy food, friendly service, good prices. The last two times I went, I was grossly overcharged, one time had to wait at my table more than an hour to get the basic dim sum items (ha gow, cha shu bow) - while they were being served in the other aisle! - while repeatedly being offered chicken feet and steamed broccoli, and was treated rudely by most of the staff. It seemed there was a middle-aged woman running the operation, whom I hadn't seen before. I imagine she has taken over management of the place and doesn't like white folks, or something, but I will not go there any more for dim sum. There are lots of places in the ID to get it, and I don't need to pay way too much money to be mistreated and not get to eat.

Hi NoraJP, I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at China Gate in the past, But I would like to let you know that it's under new management. Most of the staff has changed so you don't have to worry about the waiters and waitresses being rude anymore, and we are also running a special offer daily between the times of 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. where most of our dim sum items are $2.00 a dish everything except for kitchen special dim sum items. With our special and happy hour items you wouldn't have to be worried about being grossly overcharged. So I hope you give the new management a chance.

Not a good place to go for dimsum. – First of all, the place is a bit dirty for me. I do not like the atmosphere at all! The dimsum selection is limited, not much to choose from. I have been to several yumcha or dimsum places in hongkong. So far this is the worst dimsum place that I ever been to. Me and my husband are still on the hunt for the best dimsum place in seattle. So far, Top Gun is BEST! :)

Hi genie2008, I'm sorry to hear that your experiences at China Gate were bad, but it has changed ownership's since this review. Were you able to stop by and give it a try? We have all new chefs so the taste would definitely be different from your previous experiences there. I hope you give the new management and staff a chance =].

Best dimsum place in the International District – Please ignore the comment given by gdmk on March 11, 2008. This person does not know what he is talking about - he calls the dim sum served in carts "appetizers"! Dim sum is why folks go to China Gate for lunch!

China Gate serves the best dimsum in Seattle and the waiters give very fast and friendly service.

I have eaten dimsum in the Chinatown restaurants of San Francisco, Vancouver and New York and even grew up eating authentic Cantonese dimsum in HongKong, so I know what I am talking about.

Know the restaurant's specialty before you go there to eat, and of course, know what you are talking about when you write a review!

Hi cfinseattle, I'm glad to hear that you enjoy the dim sum at China Gate. Have you been there again within the past year or so? It's under new management and the staff is completely different than the previous ownership. I would like to know if you still enjoy the dim sum and if it is as good as before. I look forward to hearing from you, but if you're too busy I also understand =].

Terrible Experience – The idea we had to go there for lunch was not a good one. We sat, after 10 min, had to ask 3 different waiters in order to get the menus while other waiters were trying to make us pick appetizers -that they weren't able to explain in english what they were- from a cart. No meaning in trying to remember what we had, because it was just horrendus. We told the waitress to change our glasses because they were filthy and received an equally filthy look. This thing does cannot even be classified as a restaurant ...

Hi gdmk, I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with this restaurant in the past. I'm hear gladly to let you know that the whole staff has been changed and it seems that you're not familiar with dim sum, but our restaurant offers more than just that. We have lunch specials, happy hour specials, and you're more than welcome to order anything off the menu as well anytime that we are open. If you get a chance, come and give New China Gate a try. And if you're there on a Saturday or Sunday during lunch hours, I will be there personally as the host, and I would be more than happy to help you and answer any questions that you may have.

Great Dim Sum!! – My husband and I love the dim sum at China Gate and go there a couple of times per week for lunch. It's always hot and fresh, and very reasonably priced. We've also had numerous dinners there also, and have enjoyed our many selections. The duck and lettuce wraps are especially yummy. The owner who is named Sonny is very personable and is always very happy to see everyone, he makes us feel very welcome every time we go there. I highly reccomend this restaurant. Ask for Sonny when you go.

Hi fushiagirl, I'm glad you had a great experience with China Gate in the past. Have you been able to come in lately? If you have, you might have notice that the management has changed and that Sonny is no longer there. But some good news is that since you thought the dim sum was reasonably priced before, we have a special going on where all of our small, medium, and large dim sum dishes are only $2.00 a dish, which helps people get full without spending all of their money. I hope you enjoy the new staff if you have gotten a chance to go in, and if you haven't yet, try and pay us a visit next time to see how things taste =].

Unwelcoming and average to sub-par food – We went there one evening when they weren't serving Dim Sum to our displeasure, as we had made the drive specifically for the Dim Sum. They had the dining area seperated and were obviously seating only white people in the front where we were seated. This wouldn't have been so bad, but we had to wait for 20 minutes to get our orders taken and it was another 30 before our soup came out. They got the orders wrong and brought us the wrong food. They were unapologetic and pretty rude. It was a very disappointing experience and we will never go back.

Hi crbjd, I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with China Gate in the past. It seems like a long time since you have not came in again seeing that this post was made a while ago. But I would like to tell you that the restaurant is under new management and we would never seat people based on race or any other kind of segregation. Although I am happy to let you know that we do serve dim sum all day long, but if you give us a chance to come in again, I would highly recommend coming at the times of 10:00 am. to 3:00 pm. because that is the time that we are running our special where most of our dishes are $2.00 a dish. Even if you are unable to come at that time we also have happy hour specials from 2:00 pm. to 5:30 pm. and between 9:30 pm. to 12:00 am. where some of the dishes are still only $2.00. But the point I do want to get across is that we do serve dim sum all day if you are willing to give us a chance =].
