Crisp skinned Chinese barbequed pork (fatty and juicy) sold by the pound is the reason to step up to the counter of this ID classic.

Great for take out by the pound or in house but don't expect a glamorous dining room. It's all about the BBQ here. If you've not been, go!

such a ripoff – Kau Kau barbeque lied to me at ruined my wedding meal. I called a month in advance to secure my order for a whole roasted pig. It cost $285 and was supposed to be 45-55 lbs with another 15 lbs. of pork stuffed in it to freed my 120 guests for a grand total of $400. I called the day of to make sure everything was ok and to pay the remainder of the costs. when i got the pig delivered it was only about 25lbs and no extra pork like i ordered. it looked meager and was very disappointing. When i called them the next day to find out what happened they were very rude and accommodating and told me that they had no way of contacting me (lie) and didn't know how much pork to add so they didn't add any, and that they could have fixed the order if i talked to them before the order went out even though i called them a total of 3 times before including the day it went out and they never said anything then. Now that makes sense, order says extra meat so lets not put any in it because we don't know how much extra. plus let's give them the smallest pig we have. They offered me a weak discount at their store in an attempt to make things better but i will never use them again for anything. Bottom line is this, if you want a special meal for a special day, don't call these people!

Tasty but there's roach problems – I love this place but saw the owners killing a couple of roaches on the wall today behind the cashier. roaches are everywhere and it's unavoidable.

!.5 Million Chickens and Ducks – I was taken to this place by an Asian man who has been going here for over 35 years – he tells me that the chef there has cooked a million and a half chickens and ducks in that time. Soy sauce chicken is the best I've ever had. Roast duck is exceptional as well. Wonderful vegetable dishes. I read one review that complained about 'fatty pork.' They much have had the side pork which is exceptionally fatty by design. When fresh from the kitchen, the burnt skin is fantastic but it does dry out a bit when you take it home in a closed box. Service depends on time and business but I have had hot food on my table in less than sixty seconds. When dinner time rolls around, the cars are double parked up the block for hours getting bbq pickup – not the case anywhere else in ID.

Good take out- love the crispy roasted pork – The only thing I love in this restaurant is the lovely crispy roasted pork. Crunchy, tasty, and fresh - only if you come in around 4:30 or after. This is the time they have the fresh crispy roasted pork come out from the oven. A lot of Chinese mom/grandma,grandpa come in this time for the fresh roasted pork. Chinese elderly people are the smartest groups to shop for very cheap but also tasty food. If you eat their lunch special at noon, and come back after 4:30 for the same order or roasted pork, you can definitely tell the difference. And plus, it's cheap. under 6 bucks. Hey, the above information is only apply to weekdays, Not sure about their weekends hours cuz I don't work at wkends. Oh, don't blame me on other food they offer in the restaurant, remember, I only recommend the Roasted Pork , especially if you come in between 4:30 - 6pm

WORST IN SEATTLE!!!! – Service - Took 35 mins before a the food came out. Rude responses, typical Chinese/Hong Kongese customer service.

Ambience - No ventalating system. The smell seems to hover all over.

Utinsils - Made from the cheapest wood material in China.

Food - The worst in Seattle! The salted fish fried rice tasted nothing that closely resembles fish. There were dark pieces of "fish" that looked tainted and came from the polluted river water in China.

The waitress does not even know what type of fish it was when we asked. Though, she did mentioned it came "from a jar". That's a red flag on freshness or lack thereof. The pork fried rice was cold, the rice looked like it came from a left-over doggy bag source.

Post meal experience - Extreme vomitting.

This place needs to be closely inspected.

!!!!! The Worst China Town has to offer !!!! – The Worst of Seattle!!!!

The BBQ is good but the service is horrible. The fried rice was burnt on several occasions. The lunch specials are reasonably priced but if you order to go they will not give you the soup that comes with the meal and you do not get much BBQ pork. Every time I go back the portions get smaller and smaller. On my last visit I decided to order the lunch special with extra BBQ pork. I went with my coworker who is Chinese. She over heard the old guy who cuts up the BBQ with a cleaver say in Chinese to the counter person that they should have charged me more. When I got back to work and opened my container I was not happy. There was no extra meat and my coworker barely had any BBQ pork in her lunch at all. How Rude! They charge you extra for everything??I thought hot mustard and sweet/sour sauce were free? What are you supposed to dip your prawns and BBQ pork in? That did it for me

I will never go back there again. I work too hard for my money to go and pay someone to treat me rudely and serve me burnt food!

MY RATING FOR KAU KAU'S........NO STARS

Disappointed – When I picked up some roast pork and BBQ pork to take home for dinner, my wife found the roast pork to be unacceptable, being very fatty, both in the meat as well as the skin and most of it was burnt, rather hard to chew.

That same evening, I called up to talk to Richard, the owner, to discuss the poor quality of the food. He claimed that the burnt parts of the pork are actually quite desirable, so much that he even charges an extra premium for that, but that I should be happy that I got it at the regular price / lb. That burnt was so good, that according to him, his wife and kids only prefer that part. Not knowing that my wife is originally from Hong Kong, someone who would know what is good or not good BBQ, we felt the owner is basically being dishonest, taking shortcuts. Losing $20 is one thing, but being lied to and being misinformed is something else. I found the owner's attitude to be rather arrogant, even suggesting to my wife that I might have actually gone to another restaurant instead of Kau Kau. I feel that it is necessary to let others know. The competition is high in the International District, so one of our other friends recommend the BBQ place across the street from the original Uwajiaya as being of a higher quality and consistency.

Fabulous Chinese Food for every kind of eater – I just ate lunch at Kau Kau and it was delicious. Great portion size, the bbq pork is delicious, and the veggies were crisp, seafood fresh, and ambiance comfortable. A really really safe bet for lunch if you work in Pioneer Square or the ID.

Editorial Review – Popular Chinese barbecue takeout in the International District offers duck, chicken, pork and more meaty favorites.
