Sleazy and sneaky. Blockbuster promises "no late fees." When I signed up for their one-year program - 1 free "old" video a month - they didn't explain the system. They just said, "If it's late past the gr ace period we buy it back. Bring it back and we'll reverse the sale price."

Then I got a phone call out of the blue. It was an automated voice, sounding like a telemarketer. I almost hung up but instead a threatening voice said, "You have $10 past due. Click 1 to pay by credit card and 2 for...." whatever.

Now that's a new concept. A past due notice when I hadn't gotten a bill! And a call that sounds like a telemarketer so you won't listen.

So I went to the store. The manager was extremely snarky. He insisted, "This has been our policy for 2 years.."I told him I haven't been going there for 2 years. I had an account and then stopped and decided to give it a try.

"If I have to buy the video," I said, "I want the video." The store has HUNDREDS of videos. The recorded voice does not tell you that you have the right to claim your video. They try to shake you down over the phone. I can't help wondering if they then re-sell the videos and make even more money. My video didn't even have the sticker removed.

This is a sleazy operation. I think they should be reported to the Attorney General and Better Biz Bureau. Lots of fine print and they hope you will make a mistake.
