Overall, three stars. Food: OK, but nothing amazing. View/setting/atmosphere on the back patio overlooking the canal: now that rates five stars. Service: two stars.
Interesting currents at play here. Today was a nice, sunny day here in Seattle so when we made a reservation, we requested a table on the back patio. When we were initially seated, I lost myself in looking at the boats floating by on the canal, the lovely strip of herb garden just on the other side of the fence, and the overall relaxed yet upscale outdoor atmosphere. When we were seated with drinks in hand, our server called out the specials and one of them was Copper River king salmon for $48. Unfortunately, they also had Copper River sockeye salmon on the regular menu for $21, so it cannibalized the special a bit. The server explained away the HUGE price difference, saying that the sockeye was frozen (which kind of detracts from their menu overall, to my mind).
Our server was perfectly lovely, however the service timing was pretty slow. When I started to pay attention mid-meal, I made sure to time dessert and it was about a half-hour from when desert menus hit the table to when we actually placed our dessert order. Great if you're having a leisurely dinner with compatriots, but drags on if you have somewhere to be after your meal.
We started with the Dungeness Crab Spring Rolls with sweet chili sauce. Absolutely the standout of the meal. I would go and get a full order of these for dinner next time.
Next up, I ordered the Grilled Alaska Halibut (English pea risotto, grilled Yakima asparagus, piquillo pepper relish). I requested the halibut done well, and while it had a nice flavor the texture was not quite what I would consider well-done - more like medium. It indeed came with asparagus. One thick stalk. One. Huh. The portion of asparagus was dwarfed by the generous piece of halibut and put the aesthetics of the dish all out of sorts (if you're into that kind of thing). The risotto, while a bit buried by the slab 'o' halibut, was really nicely done. Creamy, flavorful and the slight pop of the fresh Spring peas studding it was a great complement.
Finally, the long-awaited dessert. We decided to split the Moelleux au Chocolate (Frangelico caramel sauce, Hazelnut toffee crunch). When it arrived, we determined that Moelleux must either be French or a high-falutin'-made-up-dining-experience term for molten chocolate. It was quite good, rich, and the hazelnut toffee crunch set is off nicely. The caramel was good, but no detectable flavor of Frangelico. Another nice touch: the small scoop of freshly whipped cream, unsweetened. It cut the high-powered sweet of the dish perfectly.
Overall, a great place to come on a nice evening in Seattle. However, if food alone is your determinant, there are many other places who do it better.
Lame Seafood and horrible service – Visited this Place the other evening and was appalled with the service and way below average seafood.Granted it was busy for a wednesday evening,3-21-12 although no exscuse for really bad service,as the place is not that large as the dining area next to the bar is a small area as is the bar.It took 15 minutes for anyone to come by us to at least greet us.Took another 15 minutes to recieve 2 glasses of wine that were only 10ft away from our seats.Very meager portion of wine,as I noticed the group right next to us glasses were double in comparison to ours.We were using a dining card buy one get one free,so I think we were fround upon from the get go as being cheap diners.Well Mr owner and Manager you really ran into the wrong diner here.I am from seattle born and raised unlike most of your clientel,that doesnt know squat about seattles fine seafood restaurants and also from a very large family that knows seafood better then anyone.Yes we are connected to the areas finest seafood restaurants and fisheries all locally owned.The prawn and pasta dish was bland and boring,no flavor and with a tomatoe type sauce,wife barely touched it.my swordfish came out luke warm and under cooked and chared marks that tasted burned.The really dissapointing thing about the dish was the swordfish was on a bed of luke warm green type of seaweed slop,really unappetizing and completely tastless,I couldnt eat what ever that was,Than also with the swordfish accompanied these fried little clumps of potatoes similair to what you get at a fast food place the little hashbrown things,What a joke.Our bill came to $80 for 4 glasses of thimbles of wine 2 lousy entrees and a fair appetizer,oh and unlimited bread Yeppi.With the dining card it was reduced to $65 plus tax.So I paid and tipped the server $10 for lousy service and lousy food,She returned and laid a tipping chart on
me for the estimated tip before the discounted entree.Please !!! she was lucky to get the $10.Out the door we went after 90 minutes of wasted time Never to return.Do yourself a favor and skip the trip to Pontis and go to Rays for guaranteed delicious Seafood.
Great local Restaurant, re-discovered – I moved away from Seattle. I had been to Ponti with my parents. I recently re-discovered Ponti.I had forgotten what a beautiful restaurant it was. The food was excetional. I really like the two course meal in the bar for $ 20. I had the Copper River sockeye and my date had the Weather vaine scallops. Both were delicious. The service was superb, professional but not snobby. This is my " new " favorite restaurant. Great food. Affordable, and the perfect place to impress my date.
First Class dinning experience – I took my family to Ponti. We felt a little casual. That didn't bother the staff at Ponti. We were warmly welcomed. And the food was excellent. I had the Alaskan Black Cod, Alaskan fishermen's favorite if done rigth. It was delicious. Lightly smoked and grilled perfectly. Served with fall vegetables. All of our entrees were superb, expertly presented and cooked to perfection. I even noticed a great New York steak for my next visit. Our service was professional and the decor was beautiful, warm, and not noisey. I highly recommend Ponti.
Disappointing Seafood Experience – My husband and I went to Ponti's while in Seattle for the weekend. We were looking for a really good seafood restaurant and specifically, I wanted King Crab Legs. After researching restaurants on the internet, we went with Ponti's as they had crab legs and it was more moderately priced and not quite as expensive as some of the others. We arrived at Ponti's only to find absolutely NO crab on the menu and the response from the waitress was, "Yeah, they don't update the menu online really." Are you kidding me? We wanted to walk out at this point as I am pregnant and hormonal; however, decided to stick it out. Another bad choice. The service was horrible, the fish we ordered was undercooked, and we left the restaurant hungry and wanting dinner. I would recommend that you choose one of the MANY other options in Seattle when looking for seafood as I am sure they are MUCH better.
Pick Cafe Ponti over a full dinner – Ponti Seafood Grill has been around for quite sometime, which in the restaurant industry is no small accomplishment. The outdoor dining is beautiful, the menu is creative and the setting is light and airy- perfect for summer. The Thai Curry Penne is so unique and definitely in the top ten dishes I have ever had in Seattle, So creamy and flavorful- packed with delicious fish and crab. However, I find this is best enjoyed at Cafe Ponti. The restaurant feels a little dated with an older, slightly stuffy crowd with steep prices. You can have the same food with smaller portions including the heavenly Thai Curry Penne in the hip cafe or on the darling outdoor patio. Save money and get a better atmosphere! However, the waitresses on a couple occasions seemed annoyed when they find out you're on the patio for happy hour because you'll obviously be spending way less money. Less than stellar service aside, this is definitely the best way to enjoy this classic Seattle restaurant.
Great place to spend an outdoor summer evening. – This seafood grill has a great patio that makes for a perfect romantic evening out. Ponti is located in Fremont and overlooks both the Fremont and Aurora bridges, its right on the water and feels great on a hot summer evening with a cool breeze. Go for sunset and enoy some drinks with some great views. Happy hour is early and allows you to get some of the pricier food for cheaper prices. I don't even like seafood but can't wait to go back to this restuarant just to be able to relax by the water and watch the boats go by. Might be a good place for a special occasion dinner.
Good - but not as good as it could be – I took my eldest son to Ponti's (04/13/10) and we tried a number of dishes.
The seafood we sampled was good to great, so there's no debate there. Service was excellent. Pricing was high and portion sizes were typically (not always) on the extremely skimpy side for the price in my view. Some products we sampled were so poor it was amazing they continue to stay on the menu of an establishment with this reputation.
Staff: The staff was friendly overall and most important, they were generally FOCUSED on providing excellent and attentive service. I did not see anyone engaged in non-customer oriented actions - it was clear that attention to customers was a priority.
Service: Service levels were good. Didn't have to wait long for food to arrive, and it came pleasantly and appropriately hot, our waiter ensured that our water/wine needs were always met, and he was most accomodating in all respects. Note: Our waiter did not introduce himself by name when he engaged with us - I had to ask
PARKING: First impressions are important, and parking is a real challenge (but it shouldn't be). NO PARKING signs posted everywhere outside the restaraunt, making it very hard to determine where it's legal to park.
Prawns Tempura (Happy hour) $7 - five very light battered 2-bite prawns arrived piping hot with a unique and flavorful sauce - enough to ensure I could dip all 5 prawns and still have a tad bit of sauce left over. The prawns were great and the sauce was unique and tasty. (4 stars)
Ponti Kazi $5 - this tangy and tart non-alchoholic beverage LOOKS great, but tastes like the worst medicine I ever had as a kid,. The brew consists of a clash of flavors that don't go together well, and I would not hesitate to say it should be removed from Ponti's menu. Yuk! (0 Stars)
Monteray Grilled Calamari - A unique and flavorful sauce combined with tender calamari was a hit with us. I would definitely order this again (4 stars).
Mushroom soup: The presentation was bland, with a few sprinkles of parsley on top. The bowl did not (thankfully) contain much soup. It was a textureless puree with no bits of mushrooms, the aroma was thin, and the taste was completely uninspiring. For those who like a really good porcini mushroom soup, I heartily recommend a trip to the Adriatic Grill at the Tacoma Mall - and Ponti's chef should make the trek there himself to get schooled on what it needs to look, smell, and taste like. I guess knowing how great it COULD taste, and then sampling Ponti's fare left me wondering why they even bother to put this one on the menu. (0 stars)
Roasted Beet Salad. The presentation and texture for this one is good, with three different types of beets, all in different colors. The presentation could be enhanced considerably by applying a different cutting approach for each type of beet (all beets were presented in slices). Julienne slices for one type of beet, shredding for another, and slices for the third would make it much more appealing to the eye. (2 stars for taste/texture, 2 stars for portion size)
Alaska Weathervane Scallops. Here I will have to say my taste buds were sumptuously satisfied. These grilled scallops rank among the best I've had anywhere. Unfortunately there were only three medium scallops trending towards small. (5 stars for taste and texture, 2 stars for portion size and cost: $9 for three small scallops is a bit much in my view...)
Salmon dinner: The salmon was grilled to perfection and tasted excellent. Again, small portions of potatos and veggies on the plate. (5 stars for salmon, 3 stars for portion sizes)
Thai Curry Penne. We ordered a half portion of this dish. Color and texture were good, but taste was only ho-hum. A small portion of the good stuff, and a large amount of plain noodles without any sauce. I can make that at home thank you. (2 stars)
Classy dining – We went to celebrate a wedding anniversary and we thoroughly impressed.
You start the meal off with some tasty rolls. The seafood we had- blackened salmon and cod - were perfectly cooked. Nothing overly creative, but it was all done very well.
The dessert we shared, a chocolate something something cake, was ok (you might find it at trader joes in the freezer), but I was satisfied.
Service was outstanding and professional. Our table was cleared of used dishes constantly and our glasses were always topped off.
Two peculiarities I would point out:
1) They have valet parking, but all they used for us was the parking in front of the building. So I essentially tipped a guy to park my car for me 16 feet away. It was comical.
2) The interiors were clean and well maintained, but being there was like a flashback to the days when the Mariners were winning division pennants. They need to renovate and get rid of some of that dated and once-trendy art.
Amazing new chef, and happy hour – Went here the other night, started w/ happy hour, ended up staying for dinner, we were having such a great time. The new chef has really incorporated some great Northwest eats, the drinks are always great, and happy hour was sweet
