The crowds spill out onto the sidewalk for weekend breakfast and brunch service but visits during weekday lunch and dinner service generally mean no wait. The menu is extensive and the servings are hearty.

Forgot to review 5 Spot the last time we breakfasted here, so I am making sure to do a write-up this time!

We hit 5 Spot about 9am this morning for breakfast. The theme is Key West, so I was expecting to find some lime-y items on the menu. I am not a huge breakfast-food fan, but I have to tell you, they had me at Coconut French Toast (griddled thick cut coconut custard dipped rustic bread, toasted coconut butter & pineapple rum caramel) - yowza! I was sold at coconut custard and coconut butter, but then I read on and saw pineapple...rum...caramel - excuse me, may I have an extra napkin? I'm drooling here. Knowing that I'd need to scale back the rest of my food intake for the day and make sure it was all protein, I gleefully ordered.

Side note here: couple of rough spots. Our server started off in a pretty grumpy mood. She seemed to want to challenge the hubs over some (not spilled) milk: he asked for a fat-free latte and she said they only offered 2% - in a "wanna make something of it?" tone, complete with accompanying body language - I kid you not! I was actually amused, but the hubs was not. So, he went with regular coffee. Coffees arrived, and when he looked for fake sugar on the table, there was none. Ruh-roh, strike two. He was almost desperate enough to stir in some of the marionberry preserves on the table, but our server came back and when he asked for some fake sugar, obliged. Also, when we were ready to order our server crouched down and looked at our friend on the left-hand side of the both. He was still deciding, and so we asked her to start with me, on the right-hand side of the booth. She rolled her eyes, deadpan, and scootched over to my side of the booth and took my order. Last issue: no English muffins. Our friend ordered a breakfast that came with toast, and he asked if they offered English muffins. Nope! In his words, "What breakfast place doesn't offer English muffins?" So, couple of issues there but nothing insurmountable. Honestly, once I'd had my first sip of coffee I found everything a bit amusing.

Back to the food!!! The coconut french toast did NOT disappoint. I SO wanted to lick the plate clean. So what if I'm vibrating slightly in my chair as I type due to the sugar rush...you wanna make something of it? HAHAHA. Hubs ordered two hard-cooked poached eggs and a fruit plate - he was disappointed as the eggs served were both runny. Other than that, good stuff.

Glad we made it in at 9am, as there was a line out the door when we left.

Was I on Candid Camera ? – I was looking for the no star option. Truly, this 'restaurant' has the absolute worst service I have ever seen. It was as if the servers were on Planet Inept, Apathetic, and Incivil the entire time. I made the mistake of giving this place another try after a horrible experience the first time. I brought a group of my foreign students to what I thought would be a great cultural experience. Boy, was I wrong. The server we had just gave them a good old taste of American rudeness in action. One of my students asked--I'm not kidding--almost 5 times for a beverage refill and our victim-of-the-nanny-state server repeatedly ignored him. What a turnoff. I dared to ask the manager of the place for a calculator so that we could divide up the bill (since they refuse to give separate checks for larger groups--there were only 7 or 8 of us, but I could see how that would be truly overwhelming for the pea brain servers and manager), and he acted as if I had offered to sell his child on E-Bay. Never again, folks. The last time I made the mistake of walking through those doors was the LAST TIME I'll set foot in there again.

Like a Sunday Confessional, With Toast – Everyone dreams of having a cozy little breakfast place in their neighborhood - a place you can roll out of bed and count on to wash the taste of Saturday night out of your mouth. 5 Spot is the quintessential cure for the Sunday morning hangover.

Their menu gets overhauled every few months to reflect the regional cuisine of a different city, but you can expect the old-standbys (pancakes, french toast, bacon & eggs) to be at-the-ready in some form or another.

Things to know before you go: Like most breakfast joints, 5 Spot builds up quite a wait. In fact, if you drive by the corner of Queen Anne Ave and Galer St. from 9:00 to noon on a weekend, you’d swear 5 Spot was actually a soup kitchen for hipsters and yuppies. Also, this place isn’t exactly the bargain of the century – expect breakfast for two to top $25 (pre-tip), easily. But the food is solid, the service is usually prompt, and the satisfaction of filling your weary stomach… well you can’t put a price on that.

Shrugs – We checked out this place on a Tuesday during the workweek because we heard they change the menu around and incorporate regional flavors. Being from the East Coast and not completely impressed by Seattle restaurants in general, we thought we'd give it a try.

Our server was a sassy guy in his 30's who clearly thought himself too good for waiting tables. This guys was a hipster jerk who never went out of his way for us and was barely pleasant in the seating, serving, and checking.

The place has a ironic and iconic decorative motif. A little funky. Almost like a diner or a family restaurant.

The food we got was mixed. I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Outstanding. The chicken was hot and moist and they got all the flavors right. On the other hand, my wife ordered the "big" squash ravioli, which was sloggy, bland, and very disappointing. She was already soured before her food came by the table white wine the waiter served her- it had a flavor like the bottle had been opened for days.

Maybe the other reviewers are right?? Maybe try it for breakfast? Maybe??

The food and service are lousy – The mason jars as water glasses set the tone from the beginning for a lousy, poorly orchestrated dining experience. My breakfast plate had cold toast, overly burnt potatoes and a barely edible omelette that tasted like someone took the top off a pizza and cooked it again in 2 eggs. The waiter was surly and we waited ages to get our food. My boyfriend's corn cakes were in theory very good, but also not warmed adequately. His omelette was bland, and the sausage accompanying it was cold. This was the 3rd time I tried eating there this year and I am still not impressed. I will not return there any more.

Bland and Poor Service – My food was overcooked, and did not taste authentic. When I first entered the restaurant, I had to stand for longer than necessary, then finally walked around trying to get someone to realize that I was there. When my food arrived, it was so terrible that I felt guilty about spending any money at all. The price is definitely not comparable to the quality. Right now, they are serving a North Beach (San Francisco). As a local Northern Californian, I was excited to see what they could do. I wasn't impressed with anything that I ordered and the service was slow. The only reason I would ever go back to this restaurant is if they changed their prices to "pay what you think it's worth" - then I'd probably save a lot of money.

Is it really that hard to make toast? – Is it really that hard to actually toast BOTH sides of the bread when making toast? I find it truly disgusting. Please respond to this site- I will check it regularly- when you actually learn that toast generally consists of browning both sides of the bread- not lightly browning one side, and leaving the other completely alone. NOT GOOD. And when asked to fix please? THE ANSWER WAS NOOOOOOOOO! Super gross. Mushy. Toast. really? Is it that hard?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of NY – even though you have to wait on Sundays for brunch (DUH)! its so worth it. the food is impeccable and is well prepared. coffee is the best there. YUM!!! must go.

Always a favorite for me! – I've been a loyal customer of the 5 Spot for over a decade now and still love it to death! Their rotating menu, which changes every 3 months, always keeps open the options for trying something new. And their standard menu is loaded with some of my favorites. The Brisket is the best I've ever had and the kids love the homestyle Mac & Cheese! Breakfasts and weekend dinner time can be crowded so come early and be prepared to wait a bit especially with bigger groups, but I promise it'll be worth the wait!

Left Speechless by the Turkey Sandwich – Let me start by saying that I eat a lot of Turkey sandwiches (5-7 per week minimum), so it is hard to impress me. I ordered the open faced turkey sandwich and was left speechless. The turkey was freshly roasted, mash potatoes creamy, and gravy flavorful. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. My wife had the special, a blackened chicken breast served open face with a red pepper aoili on the bun and covered with cheeese. It came with deep fried battered leeks, which we had never had. Real tasty. We also ordered the shrimp and okra app, but this can be avoided as it is really just a plate of deep fried stuff.
