Lovely hospitality - horrible ribs – While visiting Seattle, we looked on the internet for a good rib place. The reviews of this restaurant compelled us to make the long trip to Yessler Ave. We were not put off by the simple decor, but a little unsettled by being the ONLY diners in the place at the Friday dinner hour, especially when the websire suggested making reservations. We ordered the babyback rib dinner for 14.99. When the ribs arrived, they were obviously NOT pork babybacks but instead some kind of beef shortrib. They were tough and dry and the sauce was unremarkable. The side that accompanied the ribs was a tiny bowl of fresh-from-the-can cheap pork/beans. The cornbread was dry and served sans utter or honey. So, for the extra $2.00 each to turn our ribs into a "meal", we recieved about 15 cents worth of canned beans and a dry cube of cornbread - not the best deal. The positives of this place are the friendly, attentive staff - obviously family. However, we felt that maybe they were being less than forthright assuming that we were so uninformed that we would not notice the switcheroo with beef shortribs instead of pork babybacks. The final bill was quite expensive for what we received. I seriously cannot understand how this restaurant has received the posivite reviews it has.......
BBQ, Sweet Potato Pie, and Peach Cobbler...MMmmm – Okay so I just got home from dining here. I can barely move! I am so full...!
Our good friends were celebrating tonight..so the birthday boy decided to check city search for the best BBQ around. They drove from Bellevue, we drove from Kent, and we met some nice folks at the next table that drove from Lynnwood. From the look of the area, the small building..we did not know what to expect.
Our server gave us the menu to choose from, then we go up to the window and order. They only take cash. This is a family business.
So we got our food...and WOW!!! all I can say is WOW!...if you like BBQ you will definately like R&L.
We had the brisket, ribs, chicken, pork, black eyed peas and rice, baked beans, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler...I could not stop eating...but eventually i had to stop because my eyes were about to tear up from being so full. I t was so glld that all 10 of us will be coming back. The couple from Lynnwood took some sweet potatoe pie to go...they stated they will be coming back...
What a treat to find. Sherri our server was the sweetest ever. Her grandparents opened up this establishment. The next generation still operate the place. Great hospitality from Barbara at the counter.
When we left Sherri gave us a nice big hug. Now that is what I call hospitality.
We will be coming back time and time again.
FYI...we did not get the greens that I wanted because they were all sold out. So if you want greens get there early.
Thank you R & L for a wonderful dining experience...2 hours later and Istill can't breath my belly is bulging...hahaha!

The Central District has been home to this Seattle staple for 50 years. Owner Mary Collins Davis alder-smokes her meats, then adds her own sauce. Picks include meaty ribs, brisket and hot links, served in sandwiches or as part of dinner platters. Extra-hungry diners go for the Four-Way platter (three meats plus chicken for two people) with white bread and potato salad or beans.
Wonderful BBQ – The hours are a bit odd but their product is great. The brisket melts in your mouth and they're very sweet to everyone that walks in the doors. I highly recommend getting an order to go and taking it to your favorite spot. We love taking out of town guests there and then taking them somewhere special to eat it.
Overrated – We ordered a rib dinner and a chicken sandwich. The side of potato salad was very tiny-came in the container that people usually put hot sauce or other condiments in. The BBQ was edible but by no means good. The chicken sandwich did not have enough BBQ sauce, and was basically just huge chunks of chicken that had to be cut up.
Kansas City Boy Eats at R & L – I moved from K.C. in 1975 and found R&L that summer. I now live in Costa Rica and will be eating at R & L on July 25, 2008.
Hello to all the Ladies and Dave you are the best cooker in the world. I been eating here so long the baby is now running the place. I met a young man at Ezells Chicken last summer and he said to me that the BBQ is the best he eats to.

BEST I HAVE EVER HAD – Started going there in 1977. I was pg with son now 26 and ate there nearly 3 times per week. Didn't know it was still there (moved to Oregon 20 yrs ago) Planning on making the 300 mile trip just for a sandwich!

still full of flavor. All the meats are cooked just right. Whenever I have the occasion
to travel to Seattle, I try to avoid Monday because R&L is closed. I bring a quart jar
along so I can but extra sauce, I'll buy several pounds of brisket and on my way home
I'll pick up some crusty french bread. Then I'll drool the rest of the way home to Belfair, in anticipation of my favorite meal.
Home of the BEST BBQ – The food at R&L is the most authentic Southern BBQ you can get in the pacific northwest. The brisket melts in your mouth, and the ribs fall off the bone. Plus, you even get good old wonder bread for mopping up the sauce. Thank goodness for R&L
The best BBQ – We used to call this the reverends. I started eating this delicious food in the early 70s, it has not changed, if so, only better. There used to be a home of good bbb #2 in Rainier Valley, but it closed, I miss it, it was a lot closer to home. But I do not mind the drive to get this BBQ, there is none better!
