Uncompromising contemporary art from local, national and international talent keeps the Henry (or Hank as it is affectionately called) a "go-to" must on almost everyone's list. "Go-to" it on first Thursdays and you'll take it all in for free.
Innovative public programs, rotating contemporary art exhibits, monthly meditation in the James Turrell Skyspace and free first Thursdays make HAG a Seattle treasure.
A much-needed makeover makes this UW art gallery one to watch. – The Henry Art Gallery has grown from a quirky space serving the University of Washington to the Northwest's premier contemporary art institution. Two years ago, an extensive renovation made the building over into a work of art and tripled the space of the gallery. Much of the new space is underground, but huge skylights and light wooden floors give it an open, airy feel. The large gallery opens up to accommodate large-scale modern work and the designers have wired the whole place to accomodate multi-media exhibitions. The new renovation also includes an auditorium and a cafe that adjoins a new sculpture court. So far, the exhibits in the new Henry have lived up to the promise of the new space. Always high-concept and challenging, recent shows have examined minimalist sculpture and the history of photography.
