Fine morning stop on a Sunday – On a recent weekend away, my girlfriends and I made the trip to The Buttery. Plenty of street and lot parking; a busy, busy place indeed. I am partial to breakfast and coffee/pastry houses and found The Buttery to be very good and a place to which I would return. Crowded, yes, but there are tables outside and cozy bench seating on the patio. We were delighted by a small Irish band performing indoors - such a nice treat! We ordered croissants, frittatas, and the cinnamon raisin roll from the bakery (not the breakfast counter). I enjoyed the tender roll after changing my order from the ham/cheddar croissant (not able to warm/nuke items and cheese rolls really need a quick reheat). A friend ordered the veggie frittata which we shared and it was yummy. Even sitting outside on an overcast morning, it was a perfectly fine stop for fresh pastries on a Sunday.
chocolate croissant worth ruining your diet – I drove by the buttery for 9 years before ever stopping to taste their goodies. I wasted thousands of dollars at other coffee houses and bakeries, because their products are truly superb.
I would love for their pastry items to be cheaper, but the price hasn't inhibited my spending yet.
Their croissants are on par with french style croissants and cakes are over the top delicious.
When we drive by and don't stop, my daughter (age 2) yells, "Mamma, the yummy house!"
The place to go – Every time I go to visit my friend in Santa Cruz I stop by the "Buttery" to have breakfast. They have the best croissants and cheesecakes there. Their service is excellent and the employees are friendly, making you feel as if you were at your home. This is definitely the place to go for some fresh made, home style food.
Horrible!!! – We ordered my daughter's wedding cake from there. We provided pictures and fabric swatch! They provided wrong cake. But what was their excuse, sorry they looked at the wrong picture. But there's nothing we can do for you. In other words, we got your money now go away don't bother me. The owner is the worst, when she finally returned my call the following week, she was soooo rude, very argumentive with me. We ordered pink and ivory, they provided orange and yellow, tried to reason that pink was in the family of peach (where did orange come in ) and that yellow was in the family of ivory, even provided me with the Webster dictionary definion of ivory, which uses the words "tones of yellow". Not customer friendly and they obviously don't care that they make the customer happy. She also doesn't get the fact of a once in a lifetime event. So sad to see my daughter cry on her wedding day when she saw the cake! Don't even think about order your special occasion cake from this business, they will take your $735 and run with it! Look for a reputable bakery, they clearly are not one!
Wedding Cakes BEWARE – I grew up in Santa Cruz and always heard The Buttery was one of the better bakeries in the local area. While the bakery is decent, I highly caution anyone looking to purchase a wedding cake from The Buttery. While planning my wedding a year ago, I heard that the cakes weren't all they were cracked up to be since changing bakers the last few years. My husband and I went anyway to do a tasting. The woman we met with was really disorganized and the cake wasn't fresh and was mediocre at best.
My sister and her husband ordered their wedding cake from The Buttery and got the wrong cake. Wrong flavor and not the decoration they asked for. They weren't offered a discount or anything to remedy the situation.
My cousin and her fiance just had an appointment for their wedding cake tasting a few days ago and their experience was unbelievable to me! She reconfirmed her appointment a week before and we they arrived they waited 15 minutes and finally the woman said they didn't have they appointment listed anywhere. Then asked how big of a cake they would need. My cousin told her a small cake around that would serve 40-60 people. The women asked how many people were attending the wedding and my cousin told her around 220 people. She then said she would not sell her a cake and that her "reputation would be ruined if her cake were served along side Costco cakes". This is extremely rude, uncalled for and a horrible way to treat a customer. My cousin left in tears and insulted.
