Extremely Disappointing - Expensive, Slow Service, Poor Quality, Rude Staff, Dirty Dining – Extremely Disappointing. Upon entering, everyone in our dinner party commented on the musty smell in the lobby. Kitchen pans were collecting a steady stream of water from the ceiling in the coat-check room. Mader's is over-priced with poor service. It took nearly 1.5 hours after ordering to prepare food for a party of 6. All steaks were ordered Medium - one was raw, another was well-done, and side dishes were forgotten. Water & beverages were never refilled. We had reservations on a Sunday evening and it did not appear to be a very busy night. When we expressed our dissatisfaction the hostess blamed us for not allowing more time. She was very rude and offered no apology. I will never go back. When I mentioned our troubles to some friends the next day, I was told that the local news has recently investigated Mader's for their unsanitary practices. Not something anyone likes to hear, but I do not find this surprising given the staff's obvious disinterest in providing a quality dining experience. Please do yourself a favor and go somewhere else the next time you dine out in Milwaukee. (Also see TMJ4's Dirty Dining Exposed)

Pay for Rudeness – Our family recently visited Mader's German Restaurant for the first time for a special meal before a play. When we were making the reservations for the meal, we had informed the person on the phone that we would need to be at our play at 6:30. They made our reservation for 5:00, saying that this would leave us with plenty of time to have our meal. We arrived at Maders slightly before 5:00 that night and ordered our food shortly after. We had a round of drinks and salads. And then we waited.... and waited for our meal to come out. After waiting until 5:50, we asked our waitress about our food and were told it would be out shortly. At 5:10 we went to pay our drink and salad tab and tell our hostess to cancel our order as we would not have enough time to eat. She was very rude and never once apologized for the time delay or for telling us to come only 1 1/2 hours before our play. She told us in a condescending voice that "this is fine dining" and that we should have at least expected to have 2 hours to eat. She blamed us for not having enough time to eat our meal and refused to cancel our order.

At this time our food had arrived, we had no choice but to sit down and wolf our $32 steaks down in 5 minutes so we could run to our play that was beginning in 10 minutes. Our waitress was very nice and apologized several times but it was the most horrific dining experience that we had ever had. Out of a party of 6, one steak was completely raw, 2 were overcooked, and one didn't even come with the side that was supposed to accompany it. This is unexceptable for any restaurant, much less one that considers themselves to be "fine dining". We are not strangers to the fine dining experience and have never been treated so poorly by a hostess. It makes me sick to think of how much money we wasted in this restaurant.

So if you are looking for "Fine Dining" with poorly done steaks and and a side order of condescending attitude, by all means try out Mader's German Restaurant.

Highly overrated – I was visiting town from Chicago and was guided here by the hotel staff. The service at the restaurant was horrible. We came in for Sunday brunch, waited for 10 minutes because there was no hostess.

When we were finally seated, it had to be at the bar. In addition, no one explained to us the buffet was a brunch. The waits for the food were horrible, how can you have only one person making all the omelettes and waffles? In addition the food was very overpriced, $20 per person. While I understand the restaurant might struggle to make a profit on a buffet, for the food we obtained it was overpriced.

If you're used to good food for brunch, then avoid this place. If you like typical greasy diner food then you'd be happy here. This place is just relying on tradition and a well known reputation to thrive, not its food or service

Overrated - nothing special – I was really disappointed with this experience. We had heard some many good reports. The food is nothing special and it is very pricey for both the style and the amount. We were seated by the kitchen and the place was freezing cold.

Very ordinary food, very ordinary presentation, wait staff was pleasant and worked hard.

Best part of the whole experinence was the very prompt and helpful valet parking attendant.

At these prices there is no margin for error - while the food was not bad - it was not that good.

Not a bargain – The food here is delicious -- and would be just as good for about 2/3 the (high) price. I don't understand all the non-German food on the menu, though -- why include all the "american" stuff if you're selling the place as an authentic German restaurant. My biggest complaint is that the place is just plain dull -- maybe it was an off night (a cold January Saturday) or maybe Milwaukeans eat early (we were there about 8), but the place was half empty. No music, nothing interesting to look at -- and our server was Brunhilda the Hun. Next time we'll try another German in town.

This traditional German restaurant brings hearty cuisine and Old-World ambience to modern Milwaukee. – The Scene
Generations of the Mader family have been dishing up platters of Old-World pleasure since 1902. A visit here is like a visit back to historic Bavaria; stained glass, rich woodwork and medieval weapons and suits of armor contribute to the restaurant's authentic ambience. Germany's greatest culinary hits are mainstays on the menu.

The Food
The liver dumpling soup, a rich broth filled with little dumplings of chicken and duck liver, makes the perfect start to the meal. The fresh spinach salad is tossed with a scrumptious, homemade hot bacon dressing. The moist, tender sauerbraten is a taste of Bavaria brought home with its perfectly marinated meat. Diners can wash down enormous portions of the hearty beef goulash and golden Wiener schnitzel with more than 200 types of beer.

Great German Cuisine – Delicious, authentic German fare. It is definitely not the place for light, yuppie food. The roast pork shanks are as good as can be found anywhere. The appetizers, the schnitzels and the red cabbage, sauerkraut and creamed spinach are "to die for".

Somehow, Mader's makes potatoes taste better than at home or anywhere else.

Mader's has excellent parking facilities and an efficient parking staff.

I thoroughly enjoy the strudel each time I am lucky enough to dine there.

The decor is half of the fun. The waiters and waitresses are helpful, courteous and efficient.

All in all, Mader's is one of the finest German restaurants it has been my privilege to enjoy.

Historic german restaurant – this is a great german restaurant in downtown milwaukee. food is for the most part excellent-dont miss the hungarian ghoulash. the setting is very impressive-many famous figures have dined there. the lobster bisque soup is ok, the potato pancakes are a nice side dish. service is quite good and elaborate. alot of german beers and a gift shop to boot. this place is pricey but worth it for a special meal or a memorable evening.
