Upscale, innovative menu and decor – Happily, we have never beheld the evil/wicked woman described in other reviews...looks like she really brought the ratings down. But, we've been going there as our regular favorite for a long time. The salmon quesadilla is my over-the-top favorite, and over the years we've enjoyed interesting soups like wild mushroom, pumpkin, or squash apple. Their jumbo homemade breadsticks are awesome. And I've never quite figured out what those skinny soda-straw-shaped breadsticks are about, but they're way cool too. It's a little pricey, but the intriguing menu items and quality have always been top notch so we figure that's fair. We usually go at lunch hour when it is often packed full with people waiting out the door (a good sign). Service at that time is not the fastest, but we're always in an out within an hour. Clean contemporary decor is updated regularly.
Avoid like the plague! – Didn't have a chance to even think about the mediocre food because the owner was so nasty and beyond rude to the staff. Stay far, far away if you want an enjoyable dining experience.
WORST PLACE TO TAKE YOUR MONEY – Over priced
Waste of time and money
One of the least professional establishments around! – This is one place to stay away from...I worked there for a few brief weeks a couple of years ago and it was the worst place I have ever encountered. The owner Mary is a controlling, narcissistic, rude and obnoxious charlatan who talks about the entire staff behind their backs. She stole Gary (the other owner) away from his wife and kids. She screams and yells and throws tantrums like a 2 year old. After I put 2 scoops of chocolate instead of 1 scoop on a dish of dessert, she screamed obscenities at me in front of the whole restaurant. She began slamming herself against the wall and banging on the counter tops like a bratty child. Her husband/adulterous co-owner tried to convince me to stay but I had had enough. I could not handle her. Then, she stole ALL of my tips from me - I never received a dime of the tips I earned in the 3 weeks I was there - she kept them all. This is one of the worst women on earth - not just for the restaurant business, but as a human being in general. She is pure evil to the core. I would NEVER NEVER NEVER recommend this place to anyone - people like her DO NOT deserve the business.
Please opt for take-out – I found Z Harvest to be simply adorable and when I inquired about available positions they told me I'd have the job for sure . Looking back I should have assumed something was wrong when they seemed so desperate.
The lady-owner treated me quite poorly. I was never good enough and was constantly being complained about behind my back. Even more awful, when I'd ask her if something was wrong she would never give me an explanation as to why she ranted and vented about me to other employees. I never received any feedback, just dirty looks, yelling and swearing when i was out of sight (not out of hearing range).
Putting my two weeks in even hurt on a more personal level because I felt I was starting to develop relationships with the customers. I felt I was beginning to make Z Harvest a more friendly place when I was there. I like seeing others enjoy themselves and laugh during lunch!
I am never one to leave others high-&-dry and I have a sincere concern for others wishes and well-being but after two full weeks of making myself ill from worrying about my next shift, I called the owner wanting to talk about me finishing out my two weeks. After she hung up on me and called me back, she briefly told me she did not want to waste her time with me any longer and again hung up on me. Not wanting to be walked over any longer, I composed a letter and left it on their front counter wishing them the best but expressing that I felt it would be best if I did not return.
I am still supposed to be receiving pay from there but as was mentioned by another, I am unsure if I will really ever get it all.
I encourage take out if at all possible. This way you can avoid the staff as much as possible.
I would like to thank you for your time and I am so glad I have people to relate to about all of this.
Pros: great food, diverse decor & music
Cons: pricey menu, the wait-staff that has been created by one of the unprofessional owners
Best Place in Green Bay! – Absolutely my favorite restaurant in GB. This is always where we bring guests and colleagues on a business dinner. I appreciate good food and the food here is great. Daily specials are fabulous. The soups are always a great start, especially lobster bisque. Some of my favorites are the Potato Crusted Salmon and the Shrimp and Scallop Saute. Wonderful decor, changes with the seasons. Not quite a full bar but the Margaritas are tasty! We are always made to feel welcome. The service can be slow at times, Jim is the best! Very convenient to the University. If there is a performance at the Weidner Center that night be sure to make a reservation. No need to dress up.
Definitely NOT RECOMMENDED, Owner Mary is someone to avoid – This place is horrible.....Overpriced menu, rude and snobby owners...The owner Mary is a childish, pretentious, thieving woman. The staff hates the owners. Their soups come out of a bag. The owners steal tips from the waitstaff...You will almost never see the same waiter twice as their turnaround rate is so high...Mary is neurotic and prone to temper tantrums, screaming and yelling, slamming her body into walls when she doesnt get what she wants...Definitely avoid this place...
Great food, a bit pricey. – I have been to Z Harvest Cafe several times during summer 2008. Each time the food has been wonderful, with the exception being the soups are just good, not great. But the sandwiches and entrees are another story. There is no other place in Green Bay that offers such unique and creative food. Everything is made fresh and you definitely can taste the difference. I like the fact the chef goes outside the front of the place to cut fresh herbs for the entrees from his "garden." This place is so not like most of the other restaurants in Green Bay. You will not find "sports bar" fare here or the same old boring sandwhich. There are so many unique beverages to try also. The only reason I gave this place a 4 instead of a 5 is the price of some items. Most of the time the food is worth every penny. Still, it is just a bit pricey for Green Bay, but it won't keep me from going back again and again.
So Fresh – I totally disagree with the previous comment. Maybe you should stay in your big cities and stuck up ways. I have never had a bad meal. I find it extremely refreshing in city of restaurant chains. I love that you can actually taste the vegetables and pin point ingredients. A lot of places serve dishes that look pretty, but pretty much have only one taste to them. I love this restaurant and hope more people go there with an open mind and ready to try something fresh and different.
Hardly worth anyone's time... – I went to Z Harvest Cafe because everyone is always telling me to head there, if I ever go to Green Bay. Well, I did and what I got was far less than exciting.
Maybe, I was expecting something fantastic or maybe just good meal. A friend and I ordered the soup of the Day...Pesto Chicken Tortellini; this was like a can of condensed chicken soup with cheese tortellini added to the already cut can nooodles that were in there. I had asked the waitress if I can actually get a cup of the tortellini soup...she exclaimed to me that was the soup and they were running low on tortellini.
We didn't finish the soup after like two bites.
You get these dry bread stick crackers and olive oil set on your table. Not quite a great combo to set out. The actual bread is like a frozen bread stick with too much oil and rosemary on top. It doesn't really compliment much that you are eating.
I ordered the Mushroom Polenta Salad. It was basically a WET MESS. The Polenta was falling apart, didn't have form and the mushrooms were drenched in way too much dressing. The salad wasn't great at all.
I went in with an open mind and thinking...maybe the chef is having a bad day. We head there two weeks later to eat something different...the same sloppy, too much added, over done with extras, crappy food.
Now, don't get me wrong and no offense. I am sure anyone who says that this place is a "GEM" hardly knows what good food is. I've been to Green Bay plenty of times and not by choice but because of work.
I am a foodie and I am exec sous chef...this place is trying too hard to be complicated. Their polenta would of been great with just little baby arugala on the side, lightly dressed and crispy polenta topped with a mushroom confit of some sorts.
Their steak topped off with a Gorganzola/Marscapone and fresh sage and their side...roasted fingerling potatoes and garlic cloves. This would be better opted for instead of their messy dish with too much on top and on the sides.
Not Worth the money!
