This art house theater screens movies that will make you feel smarter, cultured, and generally more superior than the average human being after viewing them. And to combat NW’s awful parking plight, they arranged for moviegoers to use the Legacy Good Samaritan lot at NW 22nd & Kearney (after 6pm weekdays and on weekends). (Note: It’s really just snacks & beer & wine here, but you are steps away from loads of restaurants…so I’m making an exception.)

Classics, documentaries and indie films are what you'll find splashed across this marquee. Affordable concessions, microbrews & comfortable seats are what you'll find inside this theater.

A locally-owned movie theater with a classically beautiful façade specializing in first-run indie films, revivals, and local showcases. Concession standouts: popcorn & microbrews.

Cozy seats, great flicks – This place is great! I saw the opening screening of Shorts 1 for the NW Film Festival here. The box office service was prompt and friendly. The wait to get in wasn't too bad, considering the event. The concession line was, however long, so you might want to get there early to ensure you get some good snacks! Once in the theater, there were plenty of seats, and they were really comfy! I was sitting in the middle of the theater on a side row and the view was great... I don't think there's a bad seat in the house.

The movie selection there was good and audience was responsive.

It's convenient to bus #17, too, which is great if you don't drive. I will definitly go back!

An independently-owned and locally-operated gem of a movie house. – In Short
Cinema 21 is the kind of cozy theater that makes itself conveniently invisible, which is exactly what a good theater should do. Lost in the romance of some great old classic, or caught up in a thought-provoking art film, you're not likely to be distracted by your surroundings. Sure, this old theater has seen better days, but character wears well here: the seats are still comfortable, the popcorn nice and salty, and the crowd usually thick and lively.

where to see the really good films – the interesting movies come to Cinema 21 first. If they have a successful run there, they usually go to Fox Tower later. But what if they don't make it to Fox Tower? Your only sure bet is to go to Cinema 21. I usually find a close by parking space even though it is on NW21st. The drinks, etc. are Reasonably Priced! The audience is simpatico, being movie lovers on the whole. Exiting the world of the movie to find yourself back on 21st is not such a shock as facing a huge parking lot.

Always a great time. – 21 is my favorite theatre in Portland. The staff is great, they have brewers yeast for the popcorn, its huge inside and most importantly the movies are always good. I dont even bother looking into the movie thats playing, I just go and its a great. If you havnt been, GO!

Favorite Theater – This theater is one of my favorites in the Portland area. It's a little out of the way, but the quality of the movies and the quality of the theater itsself are both far above average. The only downside I can see is that they only have one screen and only keep movies for one week. If your week is busy and you can't make it up to 21st, then you'll probably miss your movie. Other than that this place is everything.

It rules – Cinema 21 is my absolutely most favorite place to see a movie. The aisles and seats are big and roomy, you never feel cramped, it brings back nostalgic memories of the days when theaters had yikes only one screen, and the movie selection is awesome. I love this place!

Cinema 21 – This theatre shows wonderful foreign and independant films, some of which are played no place else in the Portland area. Most if not all of the seats are rocking-chair comfort and there is even a balcony in this now unusual one-screen cinema.
