A family owned and operated movie theater with first-rate indie fare and a second-rate setting. – The Space
A four-screen multiplex art house nestled off the main thoroughfares, the newly renovated Quad is only marginally more inviting than it was before. Some silver paint has lightened up the previous chocolate brown '70s vibe--although the Bergman and Fellini posters remain, keeping the decade's spirit alive. What hasn't changed is the Quad's very small screening rooms and even smaller screens. It's like watching projection TV, but you won't get the chance to see most of these films in public anywhere else.
The Quad does occasionally program independent and foreign films that already have had a healthy run elsewhere, but its vital role is as showroom for films which run the festival circuit worldwide and somehow never find a big-name specialty distributor. Furthermore, this movie theater may be the the only one in town where gay programming is pretty much guaranteed.
groovy movies – I've lived in New York City so long that I remember when the Quad had small screens. The Quad never changed but everyone else downscaled. The Quad is known for obscure and usually interesting films. The place has always seemed a bit shabby but I have always liked and supported it. NYC needs more theaters like this one.
A bastion of art and foreign film – I love the Quad for all the reasons noted by the last reviewer as negative. I am glad that the Quad doesn't have 30' screens and surround sound. I am glad that when you are in the Quad you know you are there and not in a multiplex in New Jersey. Thank you Quad for NOT looking like every other movie theater, for NOT giving in to mass American culture and relinquishing your ideals. Thank you Quad for being a bastion of art and foreign film in New York City.
