Constructed from fireproof concrete, steel, tile, brick and iron, the Southern is the only 19th-century theater still standing in the city. – A Little History
Columbus had a fire problem between 1889 and 1893. The city's five major theaters, including the Metropolitan Opera House, all burned down. Determined to build a fireproof hotel and opera house, 400 businessmen came together in 1893, and the Southern Theatre reopened three years later.
The Southern's doors closed in 1979, and it was close to becoming a parking garage. But after a $10 million renovation, it reopened again in 1998. Now owned and operated by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA), the Southern hosts comedy and classical, contemporary, jazz and other musical performances.
