Portions are HUGE. Great place for breakfast and lunch. Delicious french onion soup. Red velvet cake is very popular.

Great breakfast place with bustling crowd and servers. Make sure you get here earlier than the rush or else you'll be waiting for a bit. Almond crusted strawberry french toast is heavenly.

With the aroma of Pumpkin Pancakes in the morning, and warm turkey in the evening, this excellent 3rd Street spot is even more delish around the holidays. Holla for the Challah French Toast!

Brunch at Doughboys is one of the few places that's worth the wait! Expect crowds on the weekends and be sure to save room for Red Velvet.

Pancake Review at: DOUGHBOYS CAFÃ? – Pancake Review at: DOUGHBOYS CAFÉ

Today I visited Doughboys Café on 3rd Street between La Jolla and Crescent Heights, and decided to review their pancakes as my first blog entry. Until today I had only visited Doughboys once, and tried their absolutely amazing Challah French Toast (Bonaparte’s Breakfast)- so I was very much anticipating the taste of their pancakes. Although Doughboys has several tempting options, including Rice Krispy Pancakes, I decided to go with the Pumpkin Griddlecakes.

As I’m not such a fan of nuts, I asked the server if it was possible to have the meal sans walnuts; she explained that because the nuts are baked into the batter, this was not going to be possible. The server did, however, mention her dislike of walnuts as well, and assured me I wouldn’t be able to taste them. Boy was she right!

With a fantastic blend of pancakes, pumpkin, and walnuts, the first bite of Pumpkin Griddlecakes tasted like Thanksgiving morning. The pancakes were doughy but not heavy, and flavorful but not overbearing. While the pancakes were tasty with a hint of syrup, the scoop of whipped cream cheese on top sealed the deal.

The Pumpkin Griddlecakes at Doughboys are the perfect holiday breakfast treat; just steer clear if you are allergic to nuts!

*And as a side note, unlike many restaurants in LA, Doughboys serves breakfast ALL DAY LONG!

Doughboys - Horrid – 4/1/2011

THE WORST! This is not the place to go if you have a one hour lunch. Food took 30 minutes to prepare and they were not busy when we arrived at 12:10 pm. I ordered a burger - a special - too salty, asked for medium, but was told it comes one way - medium well, no pink. But, i wanted a medium burger. He said they would try. No such luck. We tried to cancel our order, but they hustled it through, telling us that food normally takes 20-25 minutes to prepare --- too long if you are on a lunch hour. I did see that they were doing a lot of take out, so I assume taht business got a priority. When they brought our meal it was lukewarm and I had cold potatoes. My friend ordered a special which came with foccacia and it did not. We boxed everything up and left. Had we stayed, I would have sent it all back -- how do you fix a tepid salt burger cooked their way

Never again. macDonalds - better, no salt.

Thinking hungry thoughs – A big bowl of french onion soup is sounding really good on a chilly day like today.

A friend turned me on to this place and now whenever I am in the neighborhood, I hook it up.

Can these people ever get it right? – Good thing they have good food because the service BLOWS! Try ordering delivery and see if they even get it right. Out of 5 recent orders only 1 was right and what a lovely lady they have taking those orders over the phone... wow.

Doughboys A-ok! – Very cute little cafe featuring breakfast, soups, salads and sammies. All-american diner stepped up by warm, welcoming, relaxed decor. Just what we were ooking for for a quiet simple Sunday dinner I ordered a soup and salad combo: portobello mushroom and pancetta on a bed of mixed greens and warm potatoes. Very delicious. The vegetable soup was hearty, but a bit on the salty side for my taste. The partner ordered the Doughboy Club, a huge sandwich, looked very tasty Decor is very cute, lots of booths on either side of the restaurant with blue and brown back pillows making restaurant with blue and brown back pillows making a very comfortable seating experience. Severa outdoor tables with heat lamps for those balmy summer nights. I especially appreciated the sage colored beadboard wainscoting all around the inside of the restaurant. Nice lighting Street parking. Great waitstaff. Overall, nice neighborhood cafe to grab some solid, classic eats Heard the desserts are good too, but did not have room to try.

Doughboys is Back Open on Third Street in Los Angeles! – After a 3 year absence, one of my favorite places to eat in L.A., Doughboys Cafe and Bakery is back open in their original location at 8136 West Third Street and I couldn't be more happy. Doughboys is one of those rare combinations of great quality food in a relaxed, casual location. Everything on the menu is good, but I am partial to their fantasic home-made soups. My favorites are Soup au Pistou - delicious French tomato based vegetable soup topped with a big dollop of homemade basil pesto; New England Clam Chowder - chock full o' ocean clams in a creamy clam broth with potatoes, carrots, celery and scallions; Stracciatella -shredded spinach, scallions, slivered steamed egg, and shredded asiago cheese in a flavorful broth and the soup that I dream about at night, their wonderful French Onion Soup - tons of onions in a flavorful broth topped with gooey Swiss cheese and home-made French bread. YUM!

Back at Full Force – If it's breakfast time and you're looking to quench a need for a sandwich, roll down to the newly reopened Dougboys (8136 W. Third Street) for their deliciously satisfying breakfast sandwiches. Bacon, fried eggs, tomatoes, cheese and even more cheese (there can never be enough) make these sandwiches just the thing you'll need after a night out.

Citysearch Editorial Review – This beloved West Third Street brunch favorite re-opened in early 2010 with a series of free meals for area residents and twitter-savvy Angelenos. Although the new space is slightly smaller (around 1300 square feet with just under 70 total seats indoors and outdoors), the menu remains exactly the same. Expect Doughboys standbys such as "the monster" (a massive grilled foccacia topped with melted Swiss cheese, roast beef, mushrooms and onions) and their 4-egg frittata to keep the crowds flocking to this casual eatery into 2011 and beyond. And of course, no one leaves here without being tempted to try some of Doughboys' well-known baked goods (the red devil cake is famous here).

Fake Reviews Below? – I would note that 3 of the 4 awful reviews below, on the main page, appear to be from individuals that haven't reviewed anything else -- suggesting that they might not be real persons. Considering all the turmoil that the restaurant went through (according to the owner, yes, but it sounds fairly legit, albeit a little dramatic, and has been confirmed by former employees) I would venture to guess that some of the neighbors and others who caused this drama used user review sites like this one to add to Doughboy's downfall.

As a huge fan that misses Doughboy's dearly, I just wanted to point this out so as to prevent the good Doughboy's name from ever being tarnished more than it deserved. You can have your opinion that it was overrated (I'd disagree) or pine about the wait (agreed) but there's no proof or even suggestion that it was teeming with vermin, aside from a single post. The original location was probably the best but I'd be hesitant to believe all you read on here... We Miss You, Dougboy's.
