What's NOT to love about the Peter J. Sharp building of the Brooklyn Academy of Music? With free music evenings in a beautiful upstairs, large Afrobeat parties in the main auditorium downstairs, and the BAM Rose Cinemas, this is often the place to be.
Eat Drink and Be Literary – This is a great series. The food is really great and the people are all genuinely nice. Some authors have been better than others, but otherwise a great event.
The hub of performing arts in Brooklyn since it opened for business in 1861. – Features
The Opera House is the largest of BAM's various venues--a renovated 2,086-seat auditorium with excellent acoustics and high, steeply-raked balconies that are best avoided by the acrophobic. The long-time home of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and a regular stopping point for the Royal Shakespeare Company, this grand space propelled a BAM renaissance when the Next Wave Festival opened its doors in 1983.
Downtown Manhattan hipsters drawn across the river to see works by Phillip Glass, Twyla Tharp, Laurie Anderson, and nouveau opera producer Peter Sellars. The focus of the Next Wave Festival has changed somewhat, but you'll still see important new works by theatrical luminaries, like avant-garde producer Robert Wilson and performance artiste extraordinaire Laurie Anderson.
