Great atmosphere, delicious food, attentive service – My husband & I went to dinner here last night on a pre-fixe dinner they were advertising. I was interested since my husband loves caviar but hadn't put much thought into the space. I'm glad i did though because it was one of the better meals we've had in the city.
We started with some oysters which were fresh & delicate, then had a lobster roll which was filling as it was a bit large but very tasty.
The 3-course dinner started with eggs 4 ways with caviar- our favorite part of the dinner- scrambled with caviar, deviled quail eggs with truffle oil, fried quail egg with caviar & poached on a potato pancake with a thick slice of bacon (my husband's favorite). Our main course was a tasty combo of scallops, alaskan crab and foie gras- very rich but a complex blend of flavors. Dessert was more kitschy than tasty- the hazelnut crisp was very nice & parfait- the blueberries with goat cheese was not my style but cute in trying to look like caviar & i'm more of a chocolate person.
All the wine pairings were perfect! The place is a bit pricey but if you're looking for a romantic & fabulous night out- i highly recommend this place!
great service and atmosphere – The food and service here is well worth the amount of money you spend - and it is pricey. I was worried that I would be disappointed after spending so much on a meal, but I left having probably the most amazing dining experience I've ever had.
The service was great, the atmosphere was comfortable and not pretentious at all, and they were very accommodating. I will definitely be searching for any occassion to make it back here for another experience.
Special Evening.. – Great restaurant that definitely has a a very nice upscale atmosphere.... The food was amazing, but the service was unbelievably slow. But, the food was definitely worth the wait. Went there for a double-birthday celebration and the wait staff really went out of their way to make it a special evening for us.
Unusual variety – They call this New York's "best kept secret". It is open continuously all day. I went at an off hour so I was the only diner in the whole place. The maitre 'd was informative about the restaurant since I just had passed it on Madison Avenue. I just got buzzed in. The room is very attractive with colorful murals. I had the prix fixe tasting menu which was quite good, especially the additional foie gras and an additional spoonful of a higher quality of caviar. I didn't even try the sushi so as not to confuse my taste buds. It was very expensive but I would return.
The only issue I had was with the wait staff who may have had too little to do. One waitress in particular would take away the dish and then yell within my hearing distance, "He's ready for the next one!" giving it a feel more of a diner. She also spent quite a bit of time looking at the rain outside the window instead of tending to the sole customer. Would definitely go back.
Straight forward and wonderful – Went for lunch. Nice restaurant on 2nd floor. Tasteful and unassuming. Excellent sushi, fish, caviar, duck confit. Service was good. The wine list is simple but good and not too overpriced, but with advance notice they will allow you to bring in your own wine and pay corkage. I will definitely go back, and next time it will be for dinner.
they have the best service in New York, their hospitality makes you feel like in a place of your own, plus its very elegant. The best food in the city!!!
Caviar Russe is simply the BEST!!
Cool place – nice, small and cool place on Madison Ave. pretty good food and pretty expensive____________________
Go for the Caviar! – I went on Valentine's Day. It was a 7 course pre-fix dinner. Though one thing was disturbing. The waiter has missed one of our courses and bought out the hearty steak course. Taken that this is a 5 star restaurant, you would think the waiter is knowledgeable enough to realize that it's a faux pas to mix up the order of the course, and would suggest to bring back the steak. To my surprise, he just told us to eat the steak and will bring out the grilled scallop after that. Shrug... what can you do. The food was enjoyable, caviar was fine. Service was a bit off. I had to ask for more wine from my bottle. I particularly appreciated the caviar. Perhaps I should?ve just bought a can and eat at the comfort of my own home.
Great Romantic Atmostphere – I made a reservation through Open Table for 9:30pm on a Tuesday night. My boyfriend and I got to the restaurant around 9:45pm (ps. look for the awning that says Caviar Ruse not Wave Sushi). Once buzzed up the hostess looks at us questioningly - I tell her we have reservations for 9:30 and apologize for running late. Eyeballing me she says, the kitchen closes at 10..do you still want to eat (10pm-in NY!!)? We said yes, and she mentioned we would have to order right away. Once seated we had the opportunity to look around and appreciate the beautiful atmosphere and thankfully we didn't feel rushed. But once we tried to place our order we found out that the sushi chef had left for the night (that's the only reason I wanted to go) and we had to order from the other selections. It turned out okay because the food was tasty, the service was efficient and the bill wasn't too high. Although there was a discrepancy with the check (they charged me for a drink I never received) and it took longer than it should have to clear up the mistake. Overall the experience was a good one and I would like to go back to actually sample the raved about sushi dishes. In the end I was more upset with Open Table for taking a reservation during a time when the restaurant would be closed (initially I had booked it for 10)! Lesson learned-call to confirm reservation and double check the hours of operation!!
This place will impress! – As the old adage goes: You get what you pay for. And this place doesn't disappoint. Caviar Russe will impress even the most knit-picky connoisseur, with class to spare. The menu is a tad on the pricey side, but when reflected against the high level of service and excellent food, it is a value unmatched even by a fire-sale at Louie Vuitton... I have been there more than once, and either I make an impression (probably not) or the wait-staff have excellent recollection. The sushi is superb and the caviar is the best in the business! This place is a must...
