A dramatic arch marks the entrance to this beloved symbol of Greenwich Village. – In Short
Bordering Fifth Avenue and NYU's campus, this park is a hub of activity. Every year, an outdoor art fair takes place on Memorial and Labor Day weekends, a Halloween parade elicits oohs and aahs and dachshund lovers live it up every May. On any given warm, lazy afternoon, people lounge at the fountain adjacent to the historic 77-foot-high Arch celebrating George Washington. On weekends, soapbox speakers draw crowds with impassioned speeches.

Cough up them nuts! – WSP is a wonderful place of worship for those who believe in the word of The Black Squirrel (TBS). I typically visit WSP on weekends and have been blessed by TBS's divine presence on numerous occasions. If you're not lucky enough to catch a glimpse of TBS, fear not my fellow squirrel worshipers- many other wonderful squirrels can be found near the benches. Bring a lot of nuts for the squirrels, but beware of the pigeon heads!

FREE SHOWS! – Some of the best street performers in NY are here on the weekends. We have been watching "Tic' N' Tac" perform here for years! They, and others, have acrobatics and humor for all! The Kids Love this park, and it's one of our favorites as well, a must see on any weekend-Holiday! (Performers are not always around weekdays.)

What NYC is all about! – Get the best of both worlds...the placid beauty of nature and a concentration of talent right in New York. Tick and Tack are amazing among some of the other acts performing on a regular basis, but Washington Sqare Park can also offer as a quiet retrite from city life. Definatly worth your while to visit!

The Plaza – This is as close as New York City gets to an organic public gathering space. Adjacent to NYU's facilities, Washington Square Park attracts more than undergraduates and tourists to its rickety benches and competitive chess matches. During summers past, I've enjoyed catching Gorilla Rep's annual production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and the various acrobatic acts that take place in and around the fountain. (Take note: This may be Gorilla Rep's last year!) The street vendor booksellers who set up tables within a stone's throw often have great buys on classics and pulp. One student's cast-off is my next bit of self-education.
