Portland's other rose garden, this gorgeous if lesser known North Portland park is a perfect place to picnic a sunny weekend day away. There's a neat old rec center on the property too, with a pool that's just the antidote to a dry kid.
Portland is home to two rose test gardens, Peninsula Park remains the original, opening in 1909. Wedding parties are often photographed in front of the impressive gazebo or spectacular fountain, yet a visit to the park can be a special day for anyone. Tennis and basketball courts, softball field, walking trail, jungle gyms, pool and picnic areas make this one of most entertaining city blocks in the Rose City.
Peninsula Park's grand brick staircases lead down into spectacular sunken rose gardens, which are arranged around a central fountain. – In Short
Inlaid brick paths line formally designed rose beds, bordered with neatly trimmed box hedges. Overlooking the gardens is a gazebo-like brick bandstand built in 1913; near it, huge old rhododendrons grow in a variety of colors. Graceful, old-fashioned lampposts dot the entire area. This sixteen-acre park features a formal rose garden (the city's first), softball and soccer fields, a basketball court, tennis court, picnic shelter, play area and swimming pool.
Jewel in North Portland – Working near by, on Swan Island, it's wonderful to have such a beautiful park nearby to stroll and escape for a picnic lunch on occasion. The great fountains, beautiful roses, mature trees, all add to giving you that tucked away feeling so close to the city. Taking a lunch, sitting on the near a fountain or a shaded park bench, is such a nice change of pace from the daily grind. A real jewel! Plenty of street parking. On hot days, drive around the park to find a shady spot!
Surprising! – In the heart of the inner city is a gorgeous park with lovely ponds and fountains that any neighborhood would be proud of. Lots of hundred year old trees and well maintained ball fields, an active community center with indoor pool... Peninsula Park with its Lovely sunken gardens is what a community park should be; the center and heartbeat of the neighborheed and a safe place for children.
