This newest entry in San Jose's growing performing arts scene is the place for those who want exciting new theater. – A new face
Eight months of renovation has turned out a magnificently remodeled building that boasts a 199-seat flexible performance space.
Inside the theater
The theater features exposed red brick walls both indoors and out, elaborately restored original hardwood floors, 15-foot high-beamed ceilings, state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, a new bar, bathrooms and dressing room.
"Theater space in downtown San Jose is so limited," says Producing Director Gary De Mattei. "So many groups are sharing the Montgomery Theater or the Center for the Performing Arts. I wanted to establish both a theater company, and a physical theater, to prove that we weren't going to do just an occasional show."
De Mattei's first show is a world premiere musical based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," with music by long-time "Beach Blanket Babylon" conductor Ed Goldfarb. Later in the year he will premiere a new opera based on "The Man with the Golden Arm."
