The library is a great spot to do work (free wifi!) when you can't bear another coffee shop. Visit the Winter Garden, a beautiful bright room with high ceilings and trees.

The giant greenhouse space on the top of the library is one of the best places to refresh yourself in a cold winter - unless there's a wedding going on.

The largest public library in the world, named after Chicago's first African-American mayor. – Perched above the massive granite and red brick building are what look like giant green gargoyles (they're actually owls). This facility, opened in 1991, is named after Chicago's first African-American mayor. Its ten floors are well organized and attractive with warm maple throughout, also boasting more than $1 million worth of public art. Chicago's rich musical heritage comes alive in the eighth floor's Visual and Performing Arts Division, home of the Chicago Blues Archives and Jazz/Blues/Gospel Hall of Fame. Kids gravitate toward the second floor Thomas Hughes Children's Library.

Quiet times – Since this library was built, no other in the city can compare. It has 8 or more floors to begin with. I like to browse there for a few hours. Books, tapes, cds, movies, kids section, pianos. What a great place. Study rooms, plenty of places to sit and read or relax.
