One of my favorite Chicago bars, the Long Room has lots of great beers, but also the best Manhattan in the city. It comes with brandy-soaked cherries and is $5 on Saturdays.
Very friendly bar – A great bar with a nice selection of beverages. The staff is friendly and the clientele always interesting. The owners are exceedingly nice, but very tall. If you're in the area, I recommend you stop in for a drink. I always stop by when I visit the city.
File under: Let's go someplace where we can talk. – The Scene
The narrow space is a subtle blend of contrasting design elements: a cast-cement bar top framed with Wisconsin walnut; hand-cut birch lampshades casting a glow on room screens made of industrial washers; circus animals and martini glasses painted on the warm green walls. Televisions, pinball machines, a jukebox, garish neon are absent and the diverse clientele don't mind a bit. Conversation without distractions is the whole point. No problem getting a seat at the bar: It stretches 60 feet and accommodates 38 barstools, with high tops along the opposite wall and a low-lit back area with booths.
More than a half-dozen Belgian beers are included in the impressive selection of microbrews and imports on tap and in bottles. Within walking distance of the Southport strip, this former shot-and-a-beer tavern has found a niche among folks who frequent low-key spots like Ten Cat and Simon's.
What every neighborhood bar should be! – Among the friendliest places I've ever had the honor of mounting a barstool. The owners and staff go out of their way to make everyone (even those coming in for the first time) feel like a regular. The friendly patrons are always happy to meet new people, but it's not a "meet market" -- being a nuisance will result in as forcible an objection as is necessary. The house band (every Sunday night at 10:30) plays a great mix of funk, blues and jazz. Drinks are strong and inexpensive. Finally, The Long Room's outdoor patio has just opened -- stargazers rejoice!
