Miami Beach's quaint keystone museum re-emerges as a world-class fine arts center. – In Short
The newly renovated complex includes a rehearsal facility for the Miami City Ballet (designed by Arquitectonica) and a new regional library. There's also an outdoor sculpture terrace, cafe and, of course, a gift shop. The art on display began as a private collection and can only be considered eclectic. It includes European paintings from the 15th through the early 20th centuries with special emphasis on Dutch and Flemish Masters. For instance, "The Holy Family" by Peter Paul Rubens vies for attention against dramatic floor-to-ceiling 16th-century Flemish tapestries. Aside from permanent medieval and Renaissance masters, traveling exhibits might include anything from Egyptian mummies to the "Fashions of Fellini," featuring famous costumes from the Italian filmmaker's "La Dolce Vita" and "8 1/2." The European collection is also supplemented by artists such as Rembrandt, Daumier, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
