In Short
It's a match made in Seattle hipster heaven: club queen Linda Derschang (Smith, King's Hardware, Linda's, Rob Roy) and chef Ericka Burke (Volunteer Park Cafe) have teamed up to gift the Emerald City with this feisty bistro. Turn-of-the-century cafeteria by day, rustic-and-trendy bar by night, it's hard to imagine a Capitol Hill social scene without Oddfellows. With antique metal sewing factory chairs, church pews salvaged from nearby St. Joe's, and black and white pictures of very serious looking men on the walls, the decor respectfully plays on the history of the space. The kitchen opens at 9am, plating up filling breakfast dishes like rosemary apple compote with granola. Lunch is a frenzy of fedoras, leggings and boots as the youngish crowd grabs bites like a PB&J panini, old-school French dip, or simple chicken salad. The best part of the day at Oddfellows falls at dusk, when the fleet of servers flits about the room dispursing votives like candles on a birthday cake. It's Linda's party and we're all invited.

I have tried the specials, such as the tuna sandwich (which had no flavor), the baked eggs were ok, but didn't even come with bread and for $8 it's over-priced - the strata is a joke! It's basically a piece of bread with some cheese on top. I would say, if you want to be on your computer, drink a coffee and have a scone, this is the right place for that- but skip the food, unless they really get it right in the near future.

I was so excited for Oddfellows to open. Capitol Hill needs establishments with better food and Vol. Park cafe is great. I wasn't expecting much, it's comfort food for the love of all things holy. No matter how many chances I give Oddfellows, the food is no good. The environment, very comfortable but the grub is ghastly. The panzanella salad is always way overdressed and tomatoes are not in season. The pulled pork sandwich is on a bun from Arby's and the meat and coleslaw is bland. The strata is dry and plain and I love strata! I tried to eat it between a side of bacon and strangely enough the bacon was flavorless! How can this be? I will say, I love the cookies and Stumptown coffee but you've got to wait in line forever to get it. Oddfellows, you've got potential, I know you can do better!

I know the owner has a bunch of bars and cafes that the poser/hipster crowd flock around . I admit I must be one of them since I found myself on a Friday night sitting at a communal table surrounded by loud and annoying strangers. The menu was limited but I chose a $10 shepherds pie. It was bland and overpriced for what it was. I could've bought some Trader Joe's shepherds pie that would've been more staisfying. For $10 they could've have included a small side salad or a freaking dinner roll. Smith , the owners other bar/cafe is guilty for being stingy with the grub as well! My friend ordered the steak. It came out on a huge platewith a tiny miniscule steak, and the side dish was a onion half with blue cheese crumbled on it! An onion half is a side dish! For that price they could afford a freaking potatoe. And what is this popularity of communal sitting tables? I hear so many people bitching about communal sitting, are these owners aware of this? The desserts were items I saw on Martha Stewarts magazine covers like 8 years ago. Things like a captain crunch bar thats like a rice krispie treat. big whoo! I love the interiors of all of the owners places but how about having a bit more substance and give more food for the price Linda?
