Love Blockhead's! – I should first start off by saying that I've actually never walked into a Blockhead's Burritos restaurant, but my boyfriend and I love ordering it on seamless web. It specializes in Mexican/Cuban food so it's not like your typical burritos, tacos, etc. I love the wraps because they use this Mexican ranch dressing. I liked the Kaluha flan too.
Used to be decent – After eating at 34th street for 6 years, the last time my wife and I went, we asked for a booth and we were told we couldn't have one for only two people. Bear in mind this was a Tuesday and it was nearly 2/3 empty. All of the booths were also empty except for one (with two people in it). The hostess was very snotty and then the manager made such a big production out of it (you could tell he thought he was managing China Grille on a Saturday night), that we have decided not to go back until they are both gone, which should not be long given the succession of staff. I always thought the food was decent, but not spectacular and the price fair, but no bargain. When you trade out a friendly staff for a hostile one, I'm done.
Pathetic staff – While the drink specials and food at Blockheads are good and can be a deal, I would think twice before venturing to this establishment. The waiters and waittress appear nice and friendly, but get so swamped that they neglect you after awhile and you end up waiting for drinking and refills on chips and salsa. My worst experience ever was when my friends and I went there for happy hour and were charged for drinks we didn't have. We paid the full bill (including the 20% gratuity--which was not deserved), minus 43 cents. The waiter came back asking for the 43 cents!!! I'm not kidding! Upon discussing this with the waiter and manager nothing was resolved. I gave the guy 50 cents since it seemed to make such a difference to him and he took it! So sad.
Love it! – I love this place. The chips and salsa are great...and so is the service, always very very nice and friendly! The frozen drinks are WAY too sweet, but for $3 over lunch, who cares!!!! Great Price!
A local burrito chain that also features quality barbecue. – The Scene
This storefront eatery is decked with colorful Mexican art and party kitsch, but it gets dim and moody enough in the evenings to suit a date. The cleanliness of the small open kitchen and its appetizing fresh-ingredient displays encourage the appetite. The menu is large and sometimes confusing; the service informal but polite.
Surprisingly tasty Texas-style barbecue gives this place culinary flexibility beyond that of most wrap-and-burrito shacks. The sweetness of succulent barbecued pork and thick salsa cruda counterpoint a salty and garlicky fresh guacamole. The taco salad is impaired by a thick, tasteless tomato-tortilla shell, but the homemade chili (best with hickory-smoked chicken) is hearty, perfectly spiced and darn good. For dessert, go with the delicate, subtle flan over the pasty rice pudding.
Blockhead's Burritos – This is a light, casual yummy Cali-Mexican place. They have fantastic salsa, entrees & specials & make great Margaritas. Even Better, on weekends they serve brunch until 4:00pm with never-ending chapagne, mimosa, orange juice, or other breakfast beverages. Being from California & having this type of brunch everywhere - it's great to have found a bright & sunny spot in Manhatton that feels like my Cali-beach town.
Fun and Fresh! – I went here for lunch and was pleasantly suprised. The food, particlarly the oft-neglected salsa, was very fresh and portions were a decent size. The atmosphere was fun and if you sit by the window, there is a lot of people-watching to be had! Avoid the flavored margaritas though--too sweet.
Ole – Blockheads is the kind of place every neighborhood should have - cheap, friendly and reliable. It's not going to win any awards for its decor, but the food is good, the portions are big, and the prices are low. I've taken many different groups of friends here and everyone has always had a good time. They have great happy hour specials and a roofdeck in the summer.
Mediocre – Came here for brunch on a Sunday - chips and salsa were passable - salsa didn't taste fresh. The breakfast burritos were average. Fill up on the unlimited mimosas and you won't notice the difference.
In the mood for Tex Mex? – Unlike most reviews I have done this location I visited only once. The salsa was fresh and homemade. The tacos where better others I've had in NYC. The place is most like the little dives I have frequented in Mexico than anything I have seen in NY. Basically the comfort is lacking but the food is the focus.
