This interactive museum is more like a huge art studio for your young ones. Why be cooped up in your 600 sq.ft apartment with your antsy kid who doesn't know what "clean up" means, when you can come here and make the biggest mess ever... and have fun while you're doing it?
This place is Fantastic! – I absolutely love CMA. I have 3 kids ages 2,6,and 9 and its the only place in the city where they can all go and there is something for everyone. There is paint and playdough and chalk for the little ones, self-portrait station, ball bond, animation, claymation for the older kids. And they always have a creative project or 2 in the open studio I even end up getting creative there. The teachers are all working artists and really engage the kids. I've loved it for years. Everyone is so relaxed. Not like a lot of places downtown that are way too structured for the kids. It's actually FUN! Also great is the "WEE" drop in class for the under 4 crowd and awesome Art Summer Camp there and on Governors Island. *****
Those under 13 will exercise their creative spirits in room after room. – Overview
Founded in 1988, this cozy split-level institution is largely participatory. After walking by a colorful coat rack, youngsters sit under a loft for a craftsy project or continue to the back workroom for messier creations with paint and glue. Downstairs, a reading alcove, costume corner and performance space (rented sometimes for parties) enlarge expressive opportunities.
Every inch of the institution, even the bathrooms, is decorated with artwork--and most of it's by kids. Permanent installations include a stunning chandelier fashioned from beads and doll parts, and three intense chalk portraits of young children. Educational arts professionals supervise all kinds of activities in a variety of disciplines via casual classes and more structured workshops. Two computer terminals allow older kids to experiment with multimedia.
