In Short
Especially popular for post-work gatherings of Flatiron suits, this seasonal, outdoor cafe hidden in Union Square Park features a new chef each year. A recent incarnation offered a basic Italian menu with pastas like linguine and clams and cavatelli with eggplant; pizza adorned with seasonal vegetables; and snacks like zucchini blossoms stuffed with goat cheese and mozzarella in carozza. You're more likely, however, to see fruity drinks and beer pass by on the wait staff's platters.

Stopped by for dinner and drinks tonight with a friend and was pleasantly surprised to be promptly seated in what we thought was a great, casual outdoor space. But after ordering we saw a r*t sitting on a nearby highchair. We pointed it out to a waiter who just laughed and walked away. Within the next 20 minutes we saw at least TEN MORE running all over the area: in and out of planters, on the walls, everywhere. Our entire side of the restaurant got up and left at the same time. When we asked the manager if he knew about the problem, he said "Yes, they normally come out after dark on that side of the restaurant." Disgusting. Don't bother.

Lets see... we found broken glass on one of the bottles of beer in our bucket of beer and chose not to finish any of the others because we werent sure where it came from. It happens, stuff gets broken... no big deal, right? Just bring me replacements for the beers. The waitress couldnt handle the situation, called over the manager. The manager looked at us like we were some kind of scammers, and somehow decided that 2 beers was the correct replacement (there were three of us) and walked away shaking his head. Who manages a place like that?

Great, low-key spot to get together with friends. A little crowded, but great outdoor location makes up for it.
