good vibe, rip-off prices – This place could be a great hangout in Harlem but it's pricing is a rip-off for all but the most gullible touristos. It's not a surprise that this place is not known for repeat business.
$11 for watered down well drinks, $7 for domestic beer, $7 for soda (!!) plus a strictly enforced 2-drink minimum AND a cover charge on weekends. Our party was charged for an $11 drink that we never even had to cover the minimum.
As much as I wish Harlem was still a good place to hang out, Id' recommend going downtown or Brooklyn for cheaper drinks and better music.
the first tueday of month good time for retirees – dont get on mona!s list the place is like one big happy family...al is the best of the owners in the harlem community...lil is a gem you will never see her in the same outfit..grand pa takes all the pictures..if you dont know what kind of beer you like tanya will help you out..
Appealing to tourists, but underground in spirit. – In Short
Overflow crowds from the Lenox have infiltrated this genteel jazz club to the point that they've printed a menu and begun to take reservations. Of all the Harlem tourist spots, however, Showman's remains furthest removed spiritually from its suddenly hipper-than-thou location midway between the universities; as the St. Nicholas Avenue area continues to gentrify, this legendary haunt, even as it peeks aboveground, will never sacrifice its underground chic.
Showmans - The Real Deal for Jazz in Harlem – Conveniently located near the subway stop on 125th Street. Showmans is a legdendary Harlem jazz club that deserves its excellent reputation. No cover. Reasonably priced drinks. Friendly staff and customers who make you feel right at home. Excellent jazz, and the players will gladly sit and chat between sets. If you love jazz, if you want to experience a true Harlem jazz club that stays true to its tradition going back to 1942, go to Showmans.
