This is what happens when high art lays common ground in Crown Heights. – Brotherly Love
Multiculturalism has been the talk of the town for decades. But few spaces have mastered the polyglot as organically and effortlessly as this gallery/performance space that, until 1999, was just a cement bunker two blocks from Eastern Parkway. Now, whether showcasing neighborhood fashion designers or founder Hanne Tierney's abstract puppetry, this little arts center doesn't just talk the talk, it walks the walk with style.
Tierney's son Myles was killed in Sierra Leone while working for the Associated Press on political upheavals in Africa. More than a tribute to her son's memory, Five Myles is a living manifestation of his spirit. Crossing cultures with inspiring vigor, Tierney's brainchild reminds us that art that's made with an awareness of its immediate surrounding community can abound with a variety of ideas.
