Anita Lo's critically lauded Asian food takes aim for, and hits, the sensibilities of serious gastronomes. The food is mature, delicate, elegant, and not that much fun. The cooking is calibrated to be just so perfect in every bite, to look beautiful, to make sense (foie gras soup dumplings = east / west, luxury / poverty). But it comes in tiny portions and doesn't deliver the kind of whallop a certain kind of vulgarian (i.e. me) likes most at dinner. But it's a great place to take a lady of a certain age, or a visiting chef or food writer.
The most Exquisite tasting menu ever – A simple, classy, peaceful place with a tasting menu that seems custom made . Incredibly accomodating and courteous staff.
We went there in a group of 6 people for our friend's birthday and opted for the 5-course tasting menu. They asked us if we were allergic to anything, or if there was something that we would not eat... like fish or red-meat, etc. The food they served seemed like it was designed for each person. Every dish was unique, unlike anything I've ever eaten before. At dessert time they served us each a different dessert. Its was a great way to try out 6 different desserts and all were exquisite.
Just when I thought it would be hard to impress a manhattan snob like me, such a lovely restaurant comes along. I highly recommend it.
beautiful tailored tasting menu – It's been a while since I've had beautifully orchestrated food and this place did not disappoint. The service was a bit on the sluggish side at the beginning, but that was quickly forgotten with the delectable combination of flavors and texture. The highlights were the fois gras soup dumpling, full of flavor and impact (although mine was not as soupy as Boyfriend's), the perfectly grilled trout, the juicy long island duck paired with the most amazing of flavors - wine and house pickled plum. A dainty touch was visible in all the dishes, and the plating was beautiful. This was the first time a tasting menu was "customized" for us with the waiter taking notes of our preferences and aversions. Well done!
Nice, but not as impressive as expected – Came in for a meal with very high expectations as I had heard so many wonderful complements. Being a foodie, I ordered the tasting menu and was wowed by the presentation -- simply gorgeous. The food however, is a different story. There was great inconsistency in the juxtaposition of flavors and I left rather disappointed. Maybe it was just an off night for them and I'd be willing to give it another try.
Wonderful in every aspect – My husband took me here for an evening out (I'd never even heard of this place before), and everything was absolutely perfect. The service was amazing, the food was incredible (I got the skate on tofu with caviar and I didn't want it to end), and the ambiance was simple and elegant. My husband and I felt like the only ones in the full room. Wonderful little touches like an amuse-bouche to start the meal, and a final trio of sweets to complete it from the chef. Would absolutely recommend this gem!
Nice quaint place – Celebrated a very significant birthday here and it was a wonderful meal. Anita Lo is inventive and thoughtful with her dishes - the on the house treat that came before the meal was amazing! Apps came out nicely and the entrees were just as tasty. I recommend the trout entree if you like light fish. Overall the meal was enjoyable with comfortable space and good service. My only gripe is that the place looks like it needs renovations but that's just being nit picky.
Wonderful – We had a lovely experience at Annisa. The host was so very kind. He knew we wanted a nice table and made a point to take good care of us. The food is elegant and tasty (fantastic martini too!). The desserts are fantastic as well. All in all, Annisa is a beautiful, & casual/elegant restaurant with excellent food and friendly service.
Ideal – my boyfriend surprised me on v-day with dinner at annisa, and i loved every minute of it. the atmosphere is cozy, not cliche or cheezy like many other restaurants with red hearts strewn everywhere. spacing between the tables was great and offered sufficient privacy. for me, the fact that it wasn't a huge restaurant was also very inviting. the food was excellent. the tuna appetizer was delicious, the lobster was succulent and perfect. the sea bass left something wanting. my b/f really like his filet mignon and hen. and the chocolate fondue was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. the wait staff were friendly and patient, and the courses felt perfectly timed and not rushed at all. overall, it was a great evening, and i would definitely go there again. although given the high prices, that probably won't be anytime soon :)
Barrow Street Gem – Wow! Great service, a relaxed dining pace, excellent wine list, spicy flavorful combinations, and a soothing interior design. Annisa is one of those places in NYC that manages to hit all the high notes while avoiding the pitfalls of many other restaurants. The staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful without being overbearing. The prices are reasonable. The food is great. A wonderful dining experience!
magic! – anita lo is amazing. i will try anything that she makes. she never disappoints. the restaurant is beautiful, and so is the food. she does a tremendous job. i also love the fact that anita actually cooks here, unlike so many other celebrity chefs. one of the best restaurants in new york.
A living room in foodie paradise. – Annisa is, for me, a living room in foodie paradise. Soft tones, romantic, comfortable seating, carpeting to muffle the delicate clink of glasses. And some of the best food around: flavors that will give you flashbacks of childhood (I recall dishes that taste like times and memories; sorry to get so sentimental). The chef so obviously cares deeply about her craft, that I am embarassed of my own lack of concern for what I do for a living. But I digress: Annisa will not disappoint.
