Pestered for a tip – Sadly, yesterday was my last time visiting Zum Schneider. For good German food, I'll be at Halo Berlin.
After a decent Rollbraten for me, and Bratwurst for my friend, but not BEFORE the plates were cleared, our waitress all but demanded we pay the check. We tipped about 15% for our SLOW service (despite the fact that the place was damn near empty) and her hastily requesting the bill be paid. We would have stayed for more beers and conversation had she not.
Minutes later, a waiter comes out (not her) and LOUDLY explains that in the United States, 20% tip is customary. (ummm yeah, isn't it also DISCRETIONARY??) We allowed ourselves to be strongarmed into leaving more tip, taking the high road. I did not want to get into an argument with him, or anyone else about the tip, nor embarass ourselves, the waitress, or the other guests debating the service there.
I won't be back. Sorry Zum Schneider...I have to agree with the other comments about the staff and service.
Horrendous service and Disappointing food – Been here twice. The 1st time I was not pleased with the slow service and how the waitress kept forgetting to refill my water after I'd asked. Had something that I thought would be a meat dish with a salad, but it ended up being a few fatty cuts of meat just sitting on a big bland salad.
The 2nd time I came with my family the service was Horrendous and waitress was god Awful. She screwed up half our orders, I had the worst pork schnitzel I've ever had in my life, my mom's roast beef must have come straight out of a can, and then the waitress padded the bill to the tune of $50, which my dad hadn't realized until after he'd paid. My dad's too proud to let us sort that out so we just left the place Angry & Hungry. Will NEVER return!
My favorite beer hub in town – There is nothing better in the summer than a cool beer in the round of friends. I love Zum Schneider for their incredible selection of German beer and tasty food.
Incompetent Staff – whatever authentic atmosphere that might have been created by a good selection of beer, dim lighting and semi-communal tables was destroyed by the frat parties at the said tables and the incompetent staff.
We(3 of us) came for dinner and waited over an hour for a table that was promised in “15- 20” minutes.
Granted you can’t exactly control the flow – but there was never an attempt to offer either an apology, a simple “hang in there” cheer or a free round. We asked once after 30 minutes of waiting how things are, we asked again after an hour. Meanwhile we had 3 rounds each while waiting. When we finally confronted the person who initially gave us the time estimate, we were called “pushy”, “not understanding things beyond their control” and a clincher “ if we don’t like it – we can go somewhere else”. Maitre d’(another person) came a second later and apologized but it was too little too late.
Katz’s pastrami was particularly tender that evening. This place blows - Epcot version of Germany on avenue C.
Not Really a Beer Garden – I'm giving it three stars because I like the overall atmosphere of the bar and especially the beer selection, but let's get real, this is not a beer garden, so I don't know why it's often touted as one. Four tables outside the bar on the sidewalk does not equal a beer garden. This place can get crazy packed, especially during Oktoberfest (obviously), but it's also a really fun place to kick back a few, even if it is out of the way.
A nice place to hang out – Absolutely a nice place to go and hang out with friends. Everything is just good there from the food, drinks and service. Must visit place .....
ZUM SCHNEIDER WHAT A SELECTION – always my go to place when I have visitors in town. Try to get there early in the summer, since it becomes extremely crowded. The Beer Selection is awesome served in GIANT glasses
Too much work to get a table – I was lured by the thought of belgium beer, long beer tables, and maybe some outdoor seating, but was sadly disappointed when once there. Seating is hard to come by, people come early and stay all night. And to have a seat you have to buy food. There is nowhere to really stand, so if you're not seated you're kind of in the way of the waiters and other patrons who like you did not get there early enough.
Where the beer and boys are... – The equation to what makes Zum Schneider a great bar for the single girl in Manhattan is quite simple. Boys like beer. Zum has a wide menu of German beers that come in huge glasses. Thus boys go here in droves, so you should too to meet said boys. Zum also creates the perfect social atmosphere to meet new people with their traditional beer-garden style community tables. It's almost like they knew exactly what they were doing all along! I'm not the biggest fan of international beers but I can recognize a good beer list when I see it, especially by the looks of joy on the male clientele's faces as they clink their liter sized glasses together in cheer. So I shall grab my own (half) liter glass and join in the festive fun, indulging in as many Wieners as I can handle. I may come for the boys, but you should probably come for the Bavarian tradition and the beer, which are far more noble reasons.

Great Spot – The best German food I have had since I was in Munich. The white sausage and the Hofbrau beer were excellent. Have been here several times, going during the day is key as it is typically not as crowded which can be an issue since the place is not that large. But overall the waitstaff was very pleasant and the food was excellent.
