We stumbled upon Castle Island and Fort Independence quite by accident. It is a beautiful park and the tour of the fort was fabulous. We had a great tour guide named Jim so if you get to take the tour try and do it with Jim. The park is a very popular place and so parking can be tough. But the walk is great with wonderful views of the harbor area and the city of Boston. If you are in Boston make a trip to South Boston and Castle Island. it is a great leisurely day..... in the city but away from the hustle bustle of city life...well worth the trip.

Harborside spot offers spectacular views, recreation and a side of history. – Overview
This 22-acre urban park, connected to the mainland by pedestrian and vehicular causeways, is on both the State and National Register of Historic Places. Its centerpiece is Fort Independence, which played a vital role in the protection of the harbor during the turbulent days of early America. Besides that slice of history, Castle Island also features a beach popular among runners, sunbathers and fishing enthusiasts.
A stroll around the "Sugar Bowl"--a circular walkway that extends out over the water--makes for a fabulous afternoon, especially when topped off with a snack from Sullivan's, which is located at the foot of Fort Independence. Kids will love the renovated jungle gym, adults will enjoy the spectacular view of downtown Boston and everyone will appreciate that the harbor water is now clean enough to dip your toes in without fear.
OO-AH – THIS IS THE BEST FREE DEAL GOING FOR FAMILIES WITH KIDS. THERE IS A PLACE FOR FOOD, A PLACE TO PLAY, A PLACE TO RUN AND THE PLACE TO TIP YOUR TOES IN THE WATER. AND THE VIEW IS FANTANTIC!
Beautiful – My boyfriend and I rollerblade here all the time. It's really lovely to be by the water and still near the city.
Southie is my hometown! – Castle Island a place of my childhood..Summertime we would have dinner on the pier at Kelly's, then a walk out to the Sugar Bowl..every night all our neighbors would walk out to the Sugar Bowl or Castle Island (it wasn't connected then)....swimming & diving on the wharf at Kelly's....evenings listening to music in the park at Farragut beach.....Summers always seemed so long & would go on forever...Oh the sweetness of being a child....It was another world then...
