The largest outdoor painting on the East Coast, "Common Threads" is the jewel in the crown of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program. – In Short
The 7,500 square foot mural takes up the entire west wall of the School District's Stevens Administrative Center on Spring Garden. Crossing eastward over Broad, you can't help but gaze up in wonder at the soaring cluster of classical and contemporary figures arranged against a stunning trompe l'oeil backdrop. Local artist Meg Saligman has painted a number of other walls around town, most recently "Philadelphia Muses" at 13th and Locust. The 34-year-old artist is also a National Endowment for the Arts Millennium Artist, an honor that carries with it a commission to paint a 20-story high mural in Shreveport, LA.
Be Awed - then Buy the Poster – A few days after moving - rather suddenly - to Philadelphia, knowing nothing about the city and being lost most of the time, I happened upon this stunning mural, and it brought tears to my eyes. The light changed, horns honked, I had to move on too quickly. I spent days trying to find it again. It is brilliant, and Philly is lucky to have it. Note that it is the only one of the city's murals available as a poster: find it on the Mural Arts Project website.
