This re-creation of the first subscription library in the Colonies houses first editions of essential titles like Newton's "Principia" and Darwin's "Origin of Species." – In Short
The original library was built on the site where Library Hall currently stands; it remained for 99 years before it was demolished. In 1954, a reproduction of the original structure went up. Library Hall currently hosts the library and offices of the American Philosophical Society, a learned society founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743. Philosophical Hall, located across the street, serves as the society's headquarters. The Library Company now operates on Locust Street just east of Broad.
